THE FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT. v. There are many interesting features in tlio fourth annual report of tho council of tho New Zealand Society of Accountants, which is to bo presented at tlio annual meeting on Wednesday next. Tho membership up to Juno 30 showed a net decrease of 109 for tho year, but of tho 117 whoso membership had lapsed on account of tho non-payment of subscriptions, 37 had boon readmitted, leaving 80 whoso membership has lapsed absolutely. No fowor than 919 candidates sat at tho second examination hold by tho University of Now Zealaud last November, and tho following May a supplementary examination was held, when sixteen candidates presented themselves to complete thoir examination. Tho result was that 27 candidates completed their examination, and were eligible as members. Tho arrangoniont entered into with tho University was working smoothly and satisfactorily, and to tho benefit of both, candidates and society. Tho arrangoniont for tho granting by tlio society of £400 per annum to the four University colleges, to tho appointment of competent lecturors in tho subjects of tho professional and book-koepers' examinations has again been carried out, and that amount, with £100 granted by the Incorporated Institute of Accountants, and a Govcrnmont subsidy of £ for £, making a total'of £1000, was proving of material assistance to tho colleges, and of considorablo benefit to tho students 'attending the lectures. Lectures on professional subjects wore to bo delivered. at smaller branches by competent gent-lemon, and tho excellent libraries of professional and legal works provided for tho various branches had been appreciated by a considerable number of members.

"The various principle accountancy bodies throughout tho British Empire," continues tho report, "liavo been approached with a view to ascertaining their policy regarding reciprocity, both as to membership and examinations. By Section 53 of tho regulations, certain societies are recognised for the purposes of admission to this body, and your council considers it desirahlo to ascertain to what extent' these bodies would bo willing to reciprocate. A number of replies have been received, several of them favourable, and in other cases, moro particularly in the case of the chartered bodies, it has not been found possible under their regulations to meet tho society." The report added that the following members of tho council retiro this year Auckland, Mr. W. W. Bruce; Wellington, Mr. A. T. Clarko; Canterbury, Mr. AV. E. Best; Otago, Mr. W. Green; Southland, Mr. E. C. Leary; and Taranaki, Mr. L. Moutoath; all of whom had been returned unopposed, with tho exception that Mr. H. C. Tewsley, a former, vicepresident, had been elected in placo ef Mr. Bruce, who did not seek re-election. The retiring auditors (Messrs. . *E. R. M'Lean, Dymock, and James Kollow) offered themselves for re-election, and tho following further candidates. had been • nominated : Messrs. Duncan M'Kay and Arthur James Petherick. Voting papers were returnablo four days before tile annual mooting. Tho report added that tlicro was a surplus of £312 los. Crl. on tho year, and £2954 on the accumulated fund.
