LACROSSE
[Bt Goal Umpire.] THE WINNING OF THE CUP. The great game of the season was plnyed on Saturday at tho Basin Reserve, under weather conditions far from ideal. It rained heavily during "tho week, and on the eventful day tho condition of the ground was bad, but in spito of all conditions about 350 flpoetatora wero present. Tho game itself, was a good exhibition of lacrosse, and from tho very first the play was fast and brilliant. Tho first quarter was played without tho net being found, it being ono continual attack and' counter-attack. Once the Auckland men should have scored, but owing to a faulty throw on tho part of their first home, Kershaw (Wellington's goal), was able to' cfrnr easily. After changing over Auckland became aggressive,, and attacked very hard, but they wore unablo to penetrate tho Black defence, and after a good save of Kershaw's, R. Renkin secured the ball and passed to Leydon, who went up the wing, and, by li lucky shot, foUna tho not. Wellington notched two more goals, making tho score 2 to nil when half'tinio was called.
On resuming, tho Auckland men showed great combination, and in a few minutes scored twice, making tho'score: Wellington. 3; Auckland, 2. After facing off again Wellington attacked, and found tho net four times in quick succession, but Auckland were not beaten._ Tliey plavcd hard and wero successful in again finding the net, but really it was then "all over"—they hadn't a clianco, Wellington being too strong. Fama nut on another goal, making tho score: Wellington 8, Auckland 3, and 6o it stood when time was called.
Higlit from the commencement of tho game Auckland wero out to win. Their captain (Stewart) Tilayed a great game, did Brown and Knight on the defence. Tho attack play was good, too. Woollams, who played third man, being very conspicuous, i-s was also Pledger, Philson, and Jl'Corskie.
For tho winners, Fama and Leydon lilayed a great attack game, and, Lacked by Andrews and I?. Benkin, good combined play was shown. O'Leary and Proud, with Byder, played well on tho defence, while Kershaw in goal played a magnificent game, saving and clearing in great style. Some said that it wae "Kershaw's tramo" out and out.
