BRITISH BY-ELECTION.-
THE LIBERAL-LABOUR SPLIT.

, London, August 21. The result of tho by-election for the Chesterfield setvfr in the House of Commons was as follows:—
_Mr. Kenyon (Liberal-Labour) 7725 Mr. Christie (Unionist) 5539 Mr. Scurr (Socialist) .. 583 Homo Rule was Lardly mentioned during the Chesterfield election., The chief interest was in the split between Liberalism and the Labour party. Mr. W. E. Harvey, Labour M.P. (VicePresident of tho Miners' Federation, who supported Mr. Kefiyon), speaking at Chesterfield, criticised the Labour party's action. Ho declared that he refused •to lire longer in such an atmosphere, and also refused the part/a dictation as to which lobby he should vote in. The party was not so independent as it pretended to be. Mr. Kenyon is a loyal miners' official, and his candidature was strongly supported by the district lodges of the Miners' Federation. Tho Parliamentary Labour Executive, however, refused to recognise Mr. Kenyon's candidature, although the local Labourites end Liberals had adopted him. At tho last General Election tlie voting was: Mr. Haslam (Labour), 7283; Mr. Guy Radford (Union*ist), 5055.
