Professor Thane stated at University College, London, that Professor Collie, in conjunction with Mr. Patterson, had, in investigations of tho effects produced on gases at low prcsstiro by high potential elcctyic discharges, _ discovered results whioli appear to indicate a synthesis or a transmutation of elements. "It is not an over-statement to say," ho added, "that this will prove to bo ono of tho greatest discoveries ever mado in chemistry, and will possibly lead to a solution of tho fundamental problem of chemical science, namely, the nature and relationships of tho elements.
