The House of Representatives met at 8.30 p.nr. Two weeks' leave of absence was grant-ed-to Dr. Bangihiroa. PENSIONS FOR POLITICIANS. ' Mr. H. J. H. OKEY presented the report of*tho Petitions Committee on. the petition of the widow of the late Ml'. E. I M. Smith for a compassionate allowance; [ The committee referred the petition to ("the Government for favourable considoraHion. ■I Mr. G. Laiirenson (Lyttelton), Mr. D. 'Buddo (Kaiapoi), and 'Mr. G. W. Russell (Avon) severally applauded the report of the committee, and hoped the Government 'would act upon it. The}-' expressed the • opinion that the Government ought to frame a scheme of pensions for members of Parliament or their dependents, which "would prevent such petitions /is that of ..'Mm. Smith coming before the House.
