THE PUBLIC SERVICES.

NEW CLASSIFICATION SCHEME. The classification schemo issued • on Wednesday night by tho Public Servico Commissioners has not been received with very great enthusiasm by Civil Servants. In many case tho maximum salary fixed for certain positions is less than that already received by those who occupy them. Officers in such a position are curious to know whether they aro to bo promoted ito a position carrying their present salary, or whether they ore to be reduced. One servant pointed out to a reporter yesterday that lie was credited with only six years' service in liis Department, ■whereas lie had teen employed thero for twelvo years. Another showed that his maximum salary, after five years' service, was .£SO a year less than that allowed to a typisto in his own Department. Prominent members of the service are naturally inclined to reticence. A conference of tho Now Zealand Civil Servico Association will ,bo held shortly to discuss the classification, together with other matters of interest to the service. Tho date of the conference has not yet been definitely fixed, but it will probably be held on September 15. Delegates from all parts of tlie Dominion will attend.
