CONDUCTOR INJURED. A serious accident yesterday befell Charles Morton, a married man, of Adelaide Road, who is engaged as a tram conductor. It appoars that shortly after noon his Aro Street car had 1 come to a standstill at. the St. John's Church loop 1 i'i Upper Willis Street, and as tho >up car was passing on tho other line he camo into contact -frith it, and was knocked beneath his own car. Fortunately the approaching car had nearly stopped, or the consequences would have been more serious. As it was, Morton was carried to Dr. Agnes Bennett's surgery in an unconscious condition, and though it was found no bones had been fractured ho was considerably bruised, and was suffer- • ing from shock. Later in the afternoon ho was well enough to bo removed home. CITY INQUEST. An inquest was held by Dr. "A. M'Arthur, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court vesterday, touching the death of George ■Johnson, who died in tho hospital on Tuesday. The verdict was that death was tho result of shock sustained by deeeas-. oil -through being accidentally scalded at. Wadestown on July 21. HAIR WASHED IN BENZINE. LITTLE GIRL'S DEATH. (By Telozraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, August 21. Tho circumstances of tho death of 'Winifred Poagram, aged nine, were investigated at an inquest last night. Evidonco was given' that tho mother washed the. girl's hair with a liquid sho believed to be kerosene. While drying tho hair before the fire, the liqir caught alight, and the child was so badly burned that sho died at tho hospital. Subsequently it was discovered the liquid was benzine. A verdict .w-ais -returned that death was due to shock. The mother was severely bumcd, and is now in tho hospital. SUICIDE BY HANGING. ' Christchurch, August 21. An, inquest vas held to-day touching tlio dentil of William David- Smith, aged--32 years, who way found hanged' at his house yesterday. A verdict was returned ;that deceased- committed suicidb -by hanging himself whilst in -a .stato of unsound mind.
