HOCKEY CONTROL.
PROPOSED ENGLISH TOUR. (By Telegraph—Press- Association.) Christchurch, August Si At a meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Hockey Association to-night- the legality was tioned of 11 motion passed: at a previous meeting which proposed that the connties of Geraldine, Mackenzie, Levels, and Waimatc should be taken from the territory of the Canterbury Association, and •made a separate association. The chairman ruled that it' was illegal, beiiv' of opinion that no territory could be allotted to a ■ new association not then in existence.
The disqualification imposed by • the Horowheuua Association 011 three clubs under its jurisdiction was endorsed. The Auckland Association forwarded a cablegram from Mr.-Elliot'E-. Davis, stating that the tour of a British rcpresensniivi fleam hod been arranged, subject t.i ratification. Details were being posted. Letters were received from tho Nelson. Wanganui, and West Coast Association?, agreeing to the terms offered tnr-u for matches in connection with the. English team's visit. Hawke's Bay sent e. londitional acceptance, and asked for further particulars. Otngo and Wairanpa also desired further.
When the Ulimaroa drew up alongside the Queen's Wharf yesterday, on her arrival from Sydney, thcro was considerable delay before passengers were .allowed to disembark, or visitors to board the vessel. The ddlay was caused by officers of .the Customs Department, who had gone on board to examine a number of Chinese, who were passengers by the vessel. There were fourteen Chinese 011 board, including one woman, all of whom 'had beon in tine Dominion before, and wero (returning after a visit to their native land. After the Customs officials had satisfied tlhemeelvos as to the identity of tho .Chinese, the gantrwnys were opened. A large number of Celestials; gathered at the wharf to welcome their returning brethren.
A detas'luueut of the Royal New Zealand Artillery went south by the Waliine last evening. Tho airtillerymen, who were undar command cf Captain R. B. Fmytlic, had brcn attending the "refresher." camp nt Palmorston North. From that town t.liey trekked to Wellington with their ■horses, taking about thrri3 days 011 t'he journey. There wore 25 horses with the detachment, and limse were embarked yesterday afternoon, the. operation bring watclied with interest by a crowd of spectators. The men and horses belong to the field batteries staticived at Dunedin and Inyercargill.
The services of the firs brigade were required at 7.-19 o'clock 011 Tuesday evening to quench ;>,n outbreak in a taxicab in Glasgow Terrace. Believing that some of the gear roquired attention, the driver stopped the car. and taking the tail lamp raised tho footboard, with the intention of investigating the trouble. Apparently tho light came in contact with some petrol, and r-oon i.lio car was in (lanes. Tho car, which is the properly of Mr. Matthewson, was insured in the Ocean Accident Co. for .E2OO. The damage was serious.
The Postmaster-General (the Hon. R. H-. Rhodes) stilted yesterday in reply to a question that he would make'inquiry as to whether it would be practicable to secure a reduction of the wireless rotes off the const. It would be necessary to confer will; tho wireless companies in tbs matter
