THE COLLEGE COUNCIL.
MONTHLY' MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Victoria College Council held last night, Mr. H. 11. Ostler presided. Thero were also present Messrs. K, M'Callum, C, B. Morison, T. R. Meming, Wm. Ferguson, A. T. Maginnity, Chus. Wilson, A. R. Atkinson, ana Dr. Prendergast Knight.
Leave of absence was granted to Sir Robert Stout, the Hon. A. L. Herdman, Messrs. R. M'Jiab, C. Watson, and A. W. Hogg.
Mr. A. W. Hogg tendered his resignation as Government representative.—Accepted with regret. Mr. B. H. Low, Lecturer in Anatomy, forwarded his resignation, as ho had been appointed headmaster of the Blenheim School.—lt was decided to congratulate Mr. Low on his new appointment.
The financial statement showed the credit balance to be .£2701 17s. 9d., and when the amount of XDSS os. lid. for monthly payments was deducted, the balance would stand at XIBO9 10s. 10(1.
A letter from the secretary of tho Dental Conference expressed the thanks of tho conference for tho use of a room at the college, and stated that it had been decided to vote the sum of 10s. to the College Library Fund. On tho recommendation of tho Financo and General Purposes Committee, it was decided that Mr. F. 0. V. Acheson should bo paid the first instalment of the Jacob Joseph Scholarship. Tho Professorial Board had re_ported that Mr. Acheson had dono substantial work under his scholarship. The Finance Committee was empowered to invest (through the council's solicitors) a sum of J250 lying in the bank to tho credit of tho Jacob Joseph Scholarship Fund.
Professor Garrow was authorised to purchase (at a stated price) the Gazette Law Reports and a volume of the New Zealand Law Reports. The Registrar of the University of Melbourne wroto with reference to a visit to New Zealand by Mr. A. Mansbridge, secretary of the English Workers' Education Association. The letter asked for assistance in the matter of expenses. The Finance Committee reported that the Professorial Board would co-operate with the council in the matter, but thought that pecuniary assistance should be given by the University. ' On the motion of Mr. M'Cnllnm, it was decided that a sub-committee, consisting of the chairman, the Hon. A. L. Herdman, Mr. Morison, and Professor Picken bo appointed to confer with the council of tho University in the matter.

Four and a half million,.? for new sohools and the enlarging and remodelling of old ones, is to bo spent by tho London County Council. The total number of new schools to bo built is 57. providing accommodation for another GO,ooo'scholars, and the work will 'take till 1919 to complete.
