MASTERTON NOTES.

The funeral of the kte Mr. James Brown took place this afternoon, and was very largely attended, Tho Carterton Borough (of which deceased had been Mayor) was officially represented by tho Mayor, Town Clerk, and several councillors. Tho Caledonian Society, the Chamber of Commerce, and other institutions with which* tho late Mr. Brown wns identified were also represented. The news.of tho promotion of tho Very Rev. Deau M'Kenna, of Mastertbn, to the position of Vicar-General has been received here with mingled feelings of regret and jubilation. No person is more closely interwoven with the social, educational, and religious affairs of community than Dean M'Kennn. He has been stationed at Masterton for twenty-six yeats, and has always been esteemed for his sterling qualities. While his preferment is regarded as well deserved. his departure will bo sincerely regretted.
