In view of the groat trouble caused by the desertions of >;eamen from oversea liners in New Zealand and Australia, a oa&u quoted by the London "Shipping Gazette" i,* of considerable interest, and should nerve as a warning to deserters. At East Ham Police Court. London, Michael O'llare, a -seaman engaged on the steamship Belgic, was charged with wilfully do* sorting his ship at Melbourne. Mr. Richards, who prosecuted for tho White Star Line, said O'llare was engaged for a voyage to Australia- and back. On arrival at Sydney on December last he deserted, but a few days later returned and apologised. He was taken back on his contract,' and worked as far as Melbourne, whero he deserted again. CHRONOMETER RATING NOTIOE. Hector Observatory, Wellington.—The position of the Hector Observatory is aa follows:— Latitude, 41deg. 17min. 3.765ec. South. Longitude, 11 hours 39mln. 4.27bdc. Ea6t of Greenwich. Height, above 1909 mean sea level, 418 feet. Chronometer Rating Notice.—At 1 p.m. to-day a galvanometer cignal for rating chronometers will be sent, from tho Observatory to the Public Telegraph Offlco and to the Dominion Museum. The noodle will move at 1 p.m. exactly of New Zealand standard mean time, when a chronometer set to Greenwich rutan time Bhould show 13 hours 30mln. Any difference will be the error of the chronometer on Greenwich mean time. At 9 p.m. correct, time will also bo'gig* nailed from the Observatory by means of oloctric lights. A green light will be switched on at about 8.45 p.m., a red ono at about 8.55 p.m., and a white ono at about 8.59 p.m., and all lights will bo witched oIT at 9 p.m. exactly of New Zea» land standard mean time. The prepare tory switching on of the lights must be considered as only approximately correct, and must not, bo.used for rating chronometors.
