Mr. Colin Gilray, New Zealand Rhodes scholar of 1908, will arrive in Wellington by the Rotorua to-morrow. Mr. Gilray, who was educated at Boys' High Sohool and Otago University, has had a distinguished career at Oxford, where he entered into tho study of law. Mr. Gilray's record in the Rugby football field is an exceptional one. He represented New Zealand before _ he left for Great Britain, and he has since won his "blue" for Oxford, and his international cap for. Scotland. Mr. Gilray is a- son of Professor Gilray, who occupies the chair of English at Otago University.
Last evening:, at tho Lower Hutt, the Mayor and councillors ossein bled for. tho purpose of making a presentation to Mr. P. R. Purser, town clerk, upon tho occasion of his severing his connection with tho council' 'to become town clerk of Hasting?. There were others present, including Mr. T. A. Peterkin, a former Mayor, and Mr. Baldwin, chairman of tho Hutt Jiiver. Board. The Mnyor (Mr. E. P. Bunny) reform] to Mr. Purser's twentyone years' service for tho corporation, during which time the council's income had increased from ,£IOOO per year to ,020,000. He congratulated Hastings on semiring the -services of a gentleman so well versed in municipal law and so assiduous in the exercise of his duties. Messrs. Peterkin and Baldwin added felicitations, both expressing appreciation of Mr. Purser's work during their association with him. The presentation consisted of a fine ram's horn inkstand, mounted in silver, and silver entree dish. After the presentation the company adjourned to the Mayor's room, where, on tho proposal of Mr. A. Blair, Mr. Purser's health was toasted.
Tho Chief Justice (Sir 'Robert Stout) left Wellington for Pailmerston North yesterday.
Tho death occurred in the_ Westport Hospitail last week of an old identity in tho person of Mr. George Johnson, 85 years of age. Deceased was a native of Ireland, and for many years followed mining pursuits.
Mr. S. Kenneth Phillips, Mus. Bac., of Auckland, has received word that tho Royal Academy of Music, London, has conferred on kirn the distinction of A.R.A.M.
Mr. W. W P. Hall, who has been in charge of tho Milton branch 1 of the Bank of Now Zealand during tlio past 17 years, lias lieen transferred to tho Rotorua branch.
Mr. E. W. Cave, depnty-Terristrar of tihe Supreme Court and clerk of _ awards at Auckland, has received notice _of his transfer to Nelson, to fill tho positions of clerk of court, deouty r registrar of tho Supreme Court, and receiver of gold ljevenue, and takes up his new duties about the end of September. Mr. Cave has a long record Of continuous employment extending • over 25 years in different branches of th« Government service.
Dr. W., O. W. M'Dowell has been elected an honorary member of the Insurance Institute of Auckland, in appreciative recognition of services rendered.
Mr. H. Temple White has been appointed organist find choirmaster at tho Wesley Church, Tnrnnaki Street. Mr. White has hold a similar position in the Feilding Methodist Church for the last nine years, and Ims nlso bwn conductor of the raiding -Choral Society. He is a son of the Rov. J. 11. Whito, of Brooklyn.
