While a gang of men were excavating at the Gear Company's works they canio across a bottle containing.a note, which read: "This bridge was erected by Geo. King, March 30, 1881. (Signed) M. 1. Ry&'n." Mr. 51. T. Byan was foreman of tlie Gear Company 32 years ago, when a creek flowed from the vicinity of bear Street through the present stock-yards and out to sea. . Petone candidates were very successful at the rccent distribution of prizes in connection v.'ith llie Trinity College of Music, securing live out of_ se.ven bc-ok prizes, thus establishing a-Wellington record. "social" on "Friday evening, and about GO people. assembled and spent a pleasant evening. Vocal items were rendered by Mrs. Qutram and Messrs. On tram, Pomfre.v. and Millward. The music was supplied by Mrs. Jones (piano). Mr. Scroggs (violin), rend extras were played by Miss Pomfrey. '

A children's gliding competition is now being arranged for. The band is in attendance every evening and Saturday afternoon. ' •
