INFERIOR DRAUGHT HORSES.
AUSTRALIAN COMPLAINTS.
Some Victorian authorities are advocating 'the imposition of a substantial duty on liorsea i'rom the Dominion. The rqa6on advanced is thivt too many inferior edits are being sent'to that market. They claim that some oi' the New Zealand horses : holding- Victorian Government .certificates are not /up to the quality of. Victorian .colte, 1 which; havo been rejected by yetarmarians for not being up to type. Ihv Kobinson, the Victorian Director of Agriculture, it is said, has every sympathy/with this complaint, and is taking steps to overcome it. It appears that on arrangement was .made some.years'ago, under which a certificate .issued in Nw Zealand was exchangeable for a Victorian certificate, without further examination of the horses upon landing in Australia. This arrijngement. has worked satisfactorily until this year. Dealers who took (•{horses to Victoria and had them rejected •are accused of taking advantage of the agreement.' Regarding the exchange of £ertificates of late years, Dr. Cameron says: "The result is that numbers of horses aTe carrying Government certificates that would never receive them hero after localinspection. That is not fair to our own breeders. We do not want Victoria to.be made a dumping ground for Soor stuff. Wo want good horses from : ew' Zealand; but not the rubbish. We 'now intend -rectifying this by either arranging with Now Zealand to reject on type, or Jto impose on imports an inspection at this end prior to the granting of a Victorian certificate. If an import examination is made we shall reject any- ' tiling likely not•■: to improvo the breed."
