' The cose of Thomas Henry Johnstefl, of \\'aihi, whose recent committal, subsequent escape, and eventual disc'lwrgo from the Auckland Mental Hospital has already brought His namo prominontly before tho public, is petitioning Parliament, through Mr. Poland, for redress. The petitioner asks for a grant of .£SOOO compensation "for the misery, degradation, pain, sufTcriiig, loss of prestige caused io my wife, family, and myself, together with the stain of lunacy'unjustly and illegally placcd upon me, and" tho stain of inheritance placed upon my oft-' spring ... 1 further demand that my name shall lx> exunnged from tlie records of the asylum files." • ........
Mrs, Johnston is also petitioning Parliament for compensation for herself and children for Iho cruelty inilicted upon tlieni bv the committal,of her.'hui-baiid to tho Mental Hospital. Sto repeats her husband's denial of tlie.allegations of in-. s.anitv, and adds: "The shock and degradation of such cruelty lias ruined my health for life, and it is only by th« grace of God that I have milled through.*
