EASTBOURNE COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Eastbouruo Borough Council,'held on Friday evening, was attended by the Mayor (Air. W. J. Organ) and Councillors Foley, Jlarsden, Pilcher, Preston, and Ho is. The Beautifying Society applied for permission to plant Cameron Street with pinus muricata. , Doubt was expressed as to the wisdom of allowing the streets to bo planted. The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee. A request by the society for a grant of .£lO was acceded to. The residents of Nikau Street werf granted authority to plant the street with wattles and Norfolk Island pines. Messrs. Izard and Weston, on behalf oi a ratepayer, served the council with notice of their intention to commence an action for damages. The claim is for ,£250, 011 account of damage alleged to have been sustained through the blocking of tlio Bona Bay culvert duriug tho May floods. The matter was referred to tho borough solicitor. Several matters in connection with tho municipilisation of tho ferry service were discussed, and referred to the Ferries Board, which will present a report later. The Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill, now before the House, was discussed. Opinion was evenly divided oil the question of tire election of the mayor |>y and from the council, as proposed in the Bill; but councillors were unanimously of the. opinion that the term of the mayoralty should be increased from one to two years ' . The New Zealand Institute of Architects' Bill was also before the council. A resolution was passed protesting against Clauso 8, as being inimical to the interests of tho public. Councillor Preston gave notice of motion that the Petone Borough Council be approached with regard to the jjossibility of its supplying Eastbourne with gas.
