Archdeacon Gosset, of Cliristchurch, who is now on a visit to England, is leaving London by the, Rualiine on October 23, and cxpects to arrive in Cliristchurch ou December 0. On Friday evening tho Board of Control of the Now Zealand Sports Protection League accepted with legrc/t the resignation of tho secretary, Mr. A. A. Paape, who has been appointed' organiser for the Reform League, and placed on record its appreciation of tlio success and oncrgy with which lie had fulfilled his duties. Applications for tho position of secretary aro to be called throughout New Zealand. Mr. Hiley, the newly-appointed General Manager of Railways, left Liverpool for Canada by the Empress of Ireland on Friday. Ho will join tho Niagara at Vancouver oai September 3, and reach Auckland on September 23. Mt. John Pcrrin, a Crimean veteran, and an early resident in tho northern district of Canterbury, died at Kaiapoi yesterday. His name appears in tho list of veterans on tho roll of honour, as a defender of the Empire, 1810-1802, which was compiled by Lord Ranfurly.—Press Association. Mr. D. Crowe, Mayor of Pahiatua, is at present recovering from a serious illness. Commissioner Richards, of tlio Salvation Army, is to make his first official visit to Pahiatua on September 5. Sergt.-Major G. J. Patrell and Ma'sterGunner It. G. V. Parker, of the Defence forces, have been appointed honorary lieutenants. The Rev. Wm. E. Gillam, chaplain to the Forces (2nd class New Zealand Chaplains' Department), has been awarded tho auxiliary forces officer's decoration. Mis 3 Kroll, tho contralto of the Smart Set, who was appearing witli that company in Wellington up till last week, lias left on a trip to England. Mr. J. H. Nancarrow, of tho Land Tax Department, was operated' upon for appendicitis on Wednesday last. Ho is making a satisfactory recovery. Awards of the Colonial Auxiliary Forces long-service medals have been, made to Captain John Mounsey (New Zealand Field Artillery), .and Lieut. Wm. J. A. M'lntosh (3rd Auckland Regiment).
Sir Joseph Ward arrived in Christchurch. ou Saturday from Wellington, and will loavo again for the south on Wednesday morning. On Monday at 11 a.m. a civic reception will bo accorded Sir Joseph. Ward at the City Council Chambers.—Press Association.
