SELLING THE EARTH.
POTATO-BUYERS'. GRIEVANCES. Complaints of a pronounoed nature have recently been made by potato-buy-ers in Sydney regarding the large quantity of "earth that is included in consignments reaching the market. This grievance lias reached such - proportions that many buyers, it is said, refuso to operate unless assurance is given to tho effect that their purchases are free from an undue quantity of earth. Tho results of several tests tliat have been made appear to show that the complaints are not without substantial foundation. In a parcel of seven bags, there was found no less than lewt. Hlb. of dirt, while another 14 bags produced Hcwt. of soil. A single bag contained 2filb., and 60 bags showed an average of 301b. to the bag. It litis been decided to communicate with consignors, requesting that more care be taken, and that a guarantee as to cleanliness bo forwarded with future consignments.
