LEAGUE & LEAGUERS.

GAME FOR "REP." POSITIONS. • Great interest (says the weekly League note) is being centred in Wellington's tirst representative team. The selectors are finding it diflicnlt to select the combination owing jto the groat improvement shown by a* number of the new players. In order that the very best will bo selected, a trial match will take place on Newtown P;irk on Saturday, between an' "A" and "B" The same promises to bo very interesting, and as every plnvor will be carefully watched by the selectors, aspirants for representative honours enrv no doubt ba depended upon to oliv

best. Tho team to play Canterbury on Newtown Park on the following Saturday will be chosen after tho trial game. The junior games have also reached an interesting stage, and a good game will take place at Duppa Street between City and Athletic, and also at the Hutt, when the Petono C. will endeavour to beat the leading team, viz., Petone A. lir Ttlceraph—Presa Association—CobttliW Sydney, August 8. H. Hordpr, and Ohallis will fill the vacancies in the New South Wales League tc-am l'or New Zealand. . BOWLS. DOMINION ASSOCIATION. Nominations closed yesterday for tho ofr fic-ers and couicil of tlie newly-cGnstitut&d Dominion Bovling Association, which for the future is to control tho whole of the bowling interests'in New Zealand. Thero may be soaie posted nominations still to arrive, and Uieso will not. reach tho North Island secretary (Mr. J. T. Roberts) until to-day. So Tar tho following nominations ha vo bam received:. Wellington Centre.—President, Mr. J. J. Mariow, of St. ivilda, Dunedin; treasurer, -Mr. Hancock, of Dunedin; council, Messrs. Tiios, Bush, Colonel R. J. Collins, A. Vc-itch, J, J. Roberts, and G. Under.wood. liast Coast Centre.—President, Mr. C. Payne (since withdrawn); council, Messrs. T. Buish, A. Veitch, Colonel Collins, and J. J. Roberts.

Wanganui Centre.—lt is understood that tho Wanganui Centre is nominating tho same gentlemen as the Wellington Centre. Nominations from the Wairarapa, Manawatu, Tnranaki, Auckland North and South should be received to-day. Dunedin Centre.—President, Mr. J. J. Marloiv, of Dunedin; rice-president, Mr. A. M. Myers, Auckland; treasurer, Mr. Hancock, Dunedin; council, Messrs. R. Smith, W. C. Allnutt, C. Payne, ' M. F. Barnett, and Jamas Allen.

In connection with the above, five men are to be elected to the council from each island. It in one island or the other, or in both, more than 'five are nominated, then the names submitted, have to bo referred back to the centres, and an election held (dolegates of clubs to centre to vote according to the numerical strength of c|ub). The duty of electing a secretary devolves upon the council. As tho first tournament to be held under tho auspices of the Dominion Association takes plaoe in Dunedin in January next, it is prac'tically certain that a Dunedin man will be elected to the position. .... - HOCKEY. SOUTHLANDERS' ARRIVAL. Members of the Southland hockey team arrived in Wellington from the south yesterday morning, and were entertained at a , "social" at the Tiffin last evening by the local association. This afternoon the team -will play Wellington representatives for the New Zealand Association's cliallengs shield, on Karori Park. The match promises to ]» a good one, as the visiting team is said to be strong. LADIES' GRADE SELECTIONS. (To the Editor.) me a few words re tho selection of trial representative teams. I would like to ask the selectors why' St. Augustine's players are not getting better treatment. Misses Eiest (inside-left), 15. [Home (any half), and E. Wren, (fulli back) are the mainstay of the team, and | nave not been considered. I have seen \ every team play but Ramblors A, and, in my opinion, I have not seen any better players in those positions. The selectors, true, have given two girls a chance, but i any of these players are, without doubt, better than those chosen. If one outside and two selectors were appointed, this would ba remedied. Encouragement ought to bo shown to tho country clubs, aujl, by giving tuem a ■ chanoe in trial teams, it would improve and uplift hockey out of the towns. Hoping that these players may. yet bo given a chance,—l am, etc., REGULAR SPECTATOR,'
