A. Oliver arrived by the Sydney boat yesterday, after spending a few weeks in the New South Wales capital. Ho states that he had a good time, and is returning shortly to ride at the A.J.C. spring meeting. On .the same boat was A. Neale, who brought Manakau back. Oxeiihope is regarded ns not likely to start in the.Winter Cup, and, for this race, Awahou is now the prime fancy. It is understood that lie. will be ridden by A. Oliver, and that H. Hatch, will take the seat on Crown Pearl. C. Piper, formerly a well-known trotting sportsman at lticcarton, but who has lately been in business in Sydney, returned hero by tho Manngamii yesterday, and intends again settling in Riccnrton. He brought back several trotters with him. G. Price came down from Awapuni yesterday to meet A. Oliver. The Highden trainer stated that his team are all doing well at home, but he will not have anything to race until the Wanganui meeting in September. By last evening's boat F. Tilley and J. M'Laughlin went south with their teams for the. I'ic'carton meeting. Expect has been reported in telegrams as working at Piccarton. but it is learned that the bay oolt is still at Fcilding, arid exercising on the roads. He is not likely to bo seen racing at Eiccarton. It is expected that F. Davis, private trainer to Mr. T. H. Lowry, will be making a move toward* Pandwiek very shortly. His team will probably consist of Soltr.no and the two-year-old halfsister to Bobrikoff. A. Oliver is to ride them in their engagements at Pandwiek.
Reports from Eiccarton state that The Rover is an unlikely starter in the Grand National Hurdles. The Victorian Amateur Turf Club's meeting will be concluded on Saturday ht Caulfield, when the big steeplechase will be decided. The New Zealand .mare Land Rose (Finland—Rose Shield) did not creatc a very favourable impression during her first weak on the Flemington tracks. She unseated her rider on two occasions whilo working. L. Hegarty, the Riccarton jockey, had both ankles cut when Master Paul fell in the Steeplechase at Mooneo Valley on July 2G. At a meeting of the Wellington Racing Club Committee on Tuesday, it was decided to enlarge both the inside and outside totalisators and to erect a public bar. Acceptances and final payments in connection with tho C.J.C. Grand National meeting close to-morrow night.
