HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society was held last evening. Mr. G. A. Chapman presided. Mr. Chapman was re-elected president. The annual report stated, inter alia:— The gross receipts in respect of the four shows held during the year fell short of the expenditure by .£l2 12s. Sd. Tho result of the year's operations, however, is a credit balance of .£l2 155., which can hardly be regarded as satisfactory, in view of tho excellent exhibition's. It. is impossible to carry through so many shows with any prospect of success.. The society is in -possession of threo valuablo trophies, for which it is hoped competition will te keen during the year—tho Licensed Victuallers' challenge ' trophy, valued at M 65., for daffodils; the rose bowl donated by Mrs. E. J. Riddiford, for collection of roses; and ,£lO 10s. silver vase, presented by Messrs. Barr and Sous;, of Covent Gardent, for amatour competition in daffodils. Messrs. Alfred Booth, of Carterton,- and Robert Gibson, of Riverlea, Taranaki, tied for the Licensed Victuallers' trophy in 1911, and it was won bv Mr. Booth in 1912. Jf the latter should be again successful in winning it, tho trophy will become his property. The Barr challenge vase will l>e competed for at tho next ■snring show for the first time. The rose bowl was won by Mr. C. Trovethick in IJII, and by Mr. Forstcr-Pratt, of Palmorston North, in 1912. Tho cottage garden competition, inaugurated on the suggestion of the late Governor. Lord Islington, was concluded during the year, and the prizes -awarded as -follow:—First prize, ,£5, to Mir. H. J. Parker: second prize, ,£3,-to lire. A.-M. Smith: and third prize; £1, to Mr. B. H. Parker. The committee desires to record its appreciation of the aid. given by Mr. Thomas Waugh. who judged tho exhibits at the rose and autumn shows, and tr> Messrs. H. A. Fox. and C. Trevcthick, who judged tho sweet pea and carnation show; and to Mr. E. J. Anstis, who judged tho soring show; and also to Misses Murray", l'rebblo.
