The work of repairing the Craig steaaner ini Calliope Dock, as a insult of tho damage done to her hull through striking a rock at Kaipara, in May last, is being eteadily ppshed on* The whole of the plates from the t.igine-room bulkhead forward to the stem havo been renewed, also the frames and floors. A la.rffe number of ■plates and frames were found to bo badly rent and buckled, aind in almost every case havo been renewed. It was'also found neeeamry to reriiov© the kelsen plates, and replace them by new ones, wliile a portion* of tho keol had to be taken out and renewed. One plate on the etarboard side aft was found to bo damaged, aaid a new one. had to bo put in. In order to enable this men to work freely on tho ship's bottom, the forward portion of the vessel was suspended, in the air cleair of the dock floor by heavy timber. This is tho first occasion on which kelsen plates have been removed, from a vessel in an Auckland dock. By the time repairs have been completed, the ve«i?e 1 wtitt be oracticaliy new from tho cncinc-room bulkhead to the stem.
