At Cuulfield to-da.v tlio big winter meeting of tho Victoria Turf Club opened. Tho principal event resulted as follows:— AUSTRALIAN HURDLE RACE, of 1500 sovs. Threo miles and a half, less 92 yards. Mb.; Arquebuse, list. 71b.; Uxbridgo, list. 31b.; Forest Prince, list, lib.; Julian, 9st. 131b.; Wingarara, 9st. 131b.; Light Ballast, 9st. 131b.; ,Minneboro', 9st. Forest Princo was favourite. Wimmera immediately assumed the lead, attended by Wingararaj Forest Prince, Light Ballast, Ballista, and Julian, with Clontaft last. P.nssing the stand the second time, Wimmera was still setting the pace three length ahead of Wingarara, and Light Ballast, with Clontaft, Forest Prince, Julian, and Uxbridgo nearest of the others. A mile from homo Wimmera was bowling along six lengthß in the lead. Ho maintained tho lead .until tha last hurdle, where Clontaft challenged, with Ballista. handy. Clontaft had Wimmera beaten a Ibuudred yards from the post, but Ballista worn Clontaft down, and won by a length and a quarter. Threo lengths separated second and third. Uxbridgo and Julian followed next. Time, Gmin. 37isec.-u record for the race. Ballista is a stable mate of Wimmera. His victory was received with a hostile demonstration, followed by counter cheers. The winner ran a moderate third at Mooneo Valley a week ago.
PRINCE PALATINE'S FAILURE
ATTRIBUTED TO SHOEING
ACCIDENT. London, August 1. It is stated that tho 'horse Prince Palatine, recently sold to Mr. J. B. Joel at a record price, .was rather badly pricked a fortnight ago while being shod, and should not havo been allowed to run in the Goodwood Oup race. He finished very leg weary.
