NOTES AND COMMENTS.
18l GtENCOIi.I • Matters are dull iu connection witli the .National meeting. Diiring the last fewdays thero has been little enthusiasm over the double or the Winter Cup. The punters are apparently waiting for a lead, and, until the whole of the horses arrive, there will be nothing doing. One penciller stated that ho could lay Dorando and The Spaniard with Coronetted freely, but there was a limit to all things, and the combinations quoted were now at a price that hackers would not take. "Strictly speaking," ho added, "I should make a 'Tommy' for Coronetted, for ho would have walked home in the Final Hurdles had lie not fallen." This is correct, but winning a National Hurdlo is a very different thing. The chestnut soil of Coronet has very bad hocks, and on this account lie is more likely to shino in heavy going than on top of the ground. The fall which ho sustained at. Trcn'thani was a heavy one, and his National prospects nro not likely to bo enhanced by it. On tho contrary, it may be expected that lie will take the first lew fences in tho National Ilurdles in a careful manlier, while tho rest of the field will be tearing at them as if it were a half-mile race. This will necessitate him giving the leaders a I>reak, and the question arises: Is he able to do this? On top of tho ground tho Parliamentary Handicap winner has proved himself to bo anything but a formidable opponent, and. though his connections profess to regard the rnco as quite a "go'od thing," it will conic an no surprise to find tho Coronet gelding outsido tho placed division at the finish. A report from lliccnrtou states that Cally Bridge has ricked his shoulder, and will lie unable to start at tho National meeting. Latest advices from Awapnni state that Aberbrothock is very sore, and he is going out of favour for the National Hurdles. D. Audorson, wlio was hurt whilo riding tho Charlemagne II youngster at Riccarton on Wednesday, is a lightweight apprentice attached to the stable presided over by JI. Hobbs. He is known/ at Kiccarton as one of tho most promising youngsters, and, last season, ho w'as up on quite a number of winners, The brood mares Effort and Sea Queen aro to leave next week for Yaldhurst on a visit to tho stallion Boniform. Messrs. Stead's horse was fourth on tho list of winning sires for tho season just closed, while one of his sons (Bon Keve) was at tho head of tho list of winiiing horses with a credit of .£3742. Though he has been entered for the VToolston Plato at the C..T.C. meeting To Kaliurangi is not to be taken to Piccarton. The good-looking Conqueror gelding has been thrown out of training and lias been sent home to his owner's place at Levin. Owing to the going at Fordell being on the heavy side Goodwill Park hos been worked lit Wangauui during the past week. P. Til ley is leaving on Monday next with Kilrain and Ivew for Kiccarton. "Whilo being exercised on tho tan track at Kiccarton on Tuesday morning the Southland horse .Tan. who is a very haril puller, took charge of his rider and bolted twice round the course. The rider was absolutely exhausted on completing the second circuit, but tho horse appeared to bo still full of running, and showed no inclination to stop. There is no knowing what might have happened had not the cross-country horseman, I'. Grow who was watching the gallon, sized up Iho position very quickly. Tie prompi l.v borrowed a hack, and cantering along the track he joined iu with .Tan and seized hold of his bridle and ■' stopped his progress. Neither .Tan nor his rider appeared miieh the wor-e for their exertions, but tlray is to be commended for lii~ presence'of mind and a plucky action ne.itl.v executed.
