Mr. C. P. Lindegreen has resigned from tho position of for tho Reform League to enter upon business on his own account.
Tlio funeral of tho lato Mr. J. H. Otto Schwartz, for many years secretary of tho Kquitablo Buildiing and Investment Company, an<l a well-known figure in tlio musical world, was attended by tlio directors and officers of tho Equitable Company, representatives of the old Wellington. Orchestral Society, and several of the local municipal bodies. Messrs. E. Liddlo, F. Ross, T. Pierard, and ,T. Luke acted as pall-bearers, and tho Rev. Joshua. Jones, of tho Hutt, conducted the service. The deceascd's brother, Mr. G. G. Schwartz, the AVellington architect, was the chief mourner. The remains were conveyed from tho Hutt, and cremated at Karori. According to tho latest Nelson "Diocesan Gazette," Mr. Win. H. Stycli, lato of Brooklyn and Masterton, will bo ordained a deacon of the Church on St. Peter's Day. Mr. GeoTgo Pock, assistant bailiff of the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, who is retiring to-day on account of illhoalith, was yesterday tho recipient of an illuminated aiddness from the officials of the Court, Tho presentation was made in tlio Magistrate's private room, by Dr. A. M'Artliiir, S.M., and Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. Both magistrates referred in very complimentary terms to Mr. Peck's services, which had been extended over a period_ of 37 years in tho Department of Justice. Tlio address waa signed by the magistrates, the Cteric of tho Court (Mr. A. H. Holmes), and other officials of tho Court.
Sir Joseph Ward is duo to arrivo back from England at Auckland by tho Niagara to-day. He will be met by frienda nt tho Thorndon Station on Monday, and driven to the t Royal Oak Hotel'. Subsequently ho will bo welcomed at a reception to be held in. the Town Hall. Tho death is announced from To Horo of Mr. Francis S. Tocker. Deceased had been in ill-health for sonio timo past. Senior-Sergeant Darby, lata of tho Wellington Polico Force, v.'ho has been engaged on 'relieving duty nt Nfllson, is retiring to-day on superannuation. Prior to his retirement, Sergeant Darby will havo three months' leave of absence. Sargoaut Barrett, of Hokitika, will bo promoted to Nelson, and Sergeant Dow, of Wost-port, is to ta.k<s Sergeant Butledge's plaoo at Mount; Cook Polico Station. Mr. Cyril Asquitli, son of tho Right Hon. Mr. H. H, Asrmitli, British Prime Minister, has secured first-class honours in classical "greats" ah Oxford, equalling liis father's and records at tho University .—Press Association cablegram (July 31, 10.50 p.m.) The death is announced of Mr. James Hazlett, of Dunedin, at the ago of 84. Mr. Hazlett was weli known in commercial oiroles in connection with tho oklestablishcdi firm of Mackewas and Hazlett. Ho was born in 1829 at Maghara, Londonderry, Ireland, and came out to tho Victorian diggings. Ho stayed some time in Gippslaml, and then came to Otngo in 1801. Two years later ho commenced business at Clyde, and conducted a largo business till 1878, when he came to Dunedin and joined Mr. Macksnros. He was Mayor of Clyde for live years and also a member of the Provincial Council for tho Clyde district for somo time before tho abolition of tho provinces. For a number of years he was president of the Dunedin Hospital, and lie was also a trustee of fho Benevolent Institution, and a member of the Charitable Aid Board.Ho was well known in connection with raoinj, and, in partnership with tho late Mr. J. Stephenson, ho owned several wellknown horsjs, including Occident, who won the Exlidbitioin Cup in 1889, and tho Duinedin Cup in 1892; Tempest, who.won the Dunedin Cup in 1593; Gipsy Grand, wlip won the Dunedin Oun in 1896; Hippomenes, Outpost, and others. He married in 18G7, a daughter of Mr. Thomas Coleanan, and ilio family consists of five sons and three daughters.—Press Association.
