MURPHY DEFEATS IRELAND. (By TelesrriDh.—SDecial OorresDondent.) Masterton, . July 30. A fifteen-round match for tho professional middle-weight bhtfrnpionship : i>f Ivew Zealand and.a purso of ,£SO, between' Barney Ireland, of U'aipawa and Denny Murphy, of Wellington, Cook place in tho Town Hall to-night, ■ and was witnessed by aboiut a thousand persons. Ireland had tho advantage in tho first few rounds, but then appeared to tire, and Murphy got in.heavy faoe and body work. Tho referee gavo the verdict for Murphy, who had fought a fine defensive battle, amidst great cheering. Three minor amateur events were got off as curtain-raisers. \V. Ireland (Waipawa) defeated A. L. Tressider (Masterton). D. Cadwallado (Carterton) drew with J. Smith (Petone). E. CoJlorton (Tenui) proved too good for D. Knapp (Pahiatua).

Tho results were as follow Bantams—Brice (Wellington) beat M'Nicholl (Christchurch); J. O'Neil (Westport) beat H. Davis (Gisborno); C. Stewart (Timaru) beat G. Smith (Otago), , Feathers.—F. Kerr (Wellington) beat W, Terris (Ashburton); N. Bennett (Auckland) beat H. Owen (Invercargill); J. Colling (Timaru) beat A. Goodman (Otago). Light-weights—J. Munro (Otago) beat W. James (Auckland); J, Hunter (Wellington) was knocked out by J. Penrose (Christchurch); W. Shutt (Timaru) beat G. Thomas (Wanganui). Middle-weights.—H. Withey (Otago) l>eat C. C.ate (Gisborne); P.
