MASTERTON NOTES.

Mr. A. E. Young, Government. Veteriiiarian, will deliver a lecture in the A. anu P. rooms on Wednesday afternoon on subject of ailments in stock. Mr. Young is conducting a series of lectures T,nder the auspices of tho Farmers' Union. During the present month, four building permits have teen issued in Mastertoil. The plans of the sections available for workers' homes in the Kuripuni Settlement have been received by tho local office of tho Labour Department. 'fiiere are twenty-two sections,* eacli containing over a quarter of an acre. Ten applications have, so far, been received for homes, and it is expected that a start will shortly bo made with tho erection of some of the buildings. A hare captured in tho neighbourhood of Masterton recently was found, on being opened, to be badly affected with hydatid cysts. This complaint is common to rabbits, but has never previously been noticed in hares. A boxing tournament is to bo held here to-morrow night. The principal event will bo a contest for a purse of .£SO and the middle-weight championship of New Zealand between "Barney" Ireland and "Denny" Murphy. There is still a keen demand for residences in Masterton, and several newcomers liavo been compelled to go into lodging?. Mr. T. N. Brodrick, Commissioner or Clown Lands, accompanied by Mr. Climie, a Government engineer, inspected "tho education reserve near Masterton yesterday. The Land Board is protecting tho reservo against encroachments, by tho Ktiamahunga Kiver. Mr. Peter Gordon lias been nominated for the position of president of the Masterton Bowling Club for the ensuing year. Tho annual report of the clubs shows that the season opened with a credit balance of .£22 155., and ended with a credit of .£35 19s. lid. The club has now an active membership of 78. A representative Nordon Clip hockey match between Wnnganui and Wairarapa i- to be played here on Thursday. The Wnirarapa. has successfully defended (he cup against Manawatu and Nelson (his season.
