NOTES AND COMMENTS.
IBy Gj.exl'oi:.] Tho Woodlands Hunt Club's annual steeplechase meeting will be held on tho Palnatua racecourso to-day. So far, none of 11, J. Mason's horses liavo been raced in Sydney, but recent auvices state that they are all doing well. For the Epsom and Metropolitan doublo Bleriot and La lieina are still at a short price iu Sydney, so apparently there is money coming for it Irom somewhere. The Australian Hurdlo Pace (3J miles) will be run at Caulheld on Saturday nest. The New Zealand-owned Julian (9st. ! 131b.) will be one of tho field. J. H. Pressor lias been confined to bed during the last few. days suffering from an attack of influenza. Ho hopes to bo able to leave with his team for Eiccarton on Monday. In Australia, racecourse crowds'have a habit of helping themselves to tho hair of any horses who "die on tho battlefield," but, in a couple of cases recently, they seem to have been a little prematura in making the customary onslaught. When United Kingdom fell at l'lemington early this month the crowd thought that he was killed, and at once began to confiscate portions of his mano and tail. Subsequently, however, the Carbinier gelding got up, and .was led away. Two years ago, Obi, winner of this year's Flemington National Hurdles, wns walking home witli the Australian Hurdle Pace when ho fell at the last fence, and remained st«nned for some time. In this instance tho jockoy (as well os the crowd) was tricked. Ho took the saddle and bridle off tho horse, and let him lie where lie was. The crowd pulled "fho dead one" off -tho course, and it was not until some considerable time had elapsed that the fallen equine regained consciousness. Mr. Harry Patterson, who recently removed his team from Melbourne to Eiccarton, will have his colours unfurled for the first time in the Dominion at the National meeting next month, when one of his horses—Chief Justice—will contest tho Hunt Club events.. This gelding is described as a goad-looking sort, :and, insomo essays at Eiccarlon last week, he showed splendid jumping. On Friday Mr. J. E. Henrys will make known his adjustments for tho Hunters' Hurdles, Trial Hurdles, Enfield Steeples, Jumpers' Flat, and Avondale Handicap, in connection with the C'.J.C. meeting, which opens on August 12. Paoli was galloped on during tho racing on the concluding day at Trentham, and, on arrival at New Plymouth, olio of his legs was considerably swollen. This caused Trainer J. O'Neill to cancel his proposed trip to Eiccartou. AVliilo riding back from the AVatmato Hunt Club's meeting on Friday last, Mr. W. llano met with a nasty accident opposite the public school at Oamaru. A motor overtook him, and the horse which he was riding took sudden fright, with the result that ho was thrown heavily, sustaining slight concussion of the brain. Tho owners of Bezonian, olio of tho Waikanae Stud sires, must have been well pleased with the results at tho Eoyal Ascot meeting last month. Sanquhar, who won tho Biennial Stakes of <£1563 for three-year-olds, is a son of Bozonian's full sister Valve. I'rue, winner of tho Coronation Stakes of 3350 sovs., for three-year-old fillies, is a daughter of Benzonian's half-brother Cicero. And again, Prince Palatine, winner for tho second lime of the Ascot Gold Cup of 3U20 sovs., cla'/ms Paraffin as his fourth Main— Paraffin • being. Bezonian's third dam. To-morrow tho Goodwood Cup comes up for decision, and it is possible that both Stulfa'tt and Princo Palatine will bo competitors over tho long course. Tho Trentham trainers, J. W. Lowe and C. Pritchard, both leavo for Eiccarton this day week.
