At .yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Education Board Sir Walter Buchanan was welcomed back. Mr. K. Lee, chairman of tho board, expressed tho pleasure of members at seeing Sir Walter back in such good health. Fitting reference was also made to tho honour conferred by his Majesty the King on Sir Walter Buchanan. Sir Chas. Bowcn tilid the Hon. K •O, J. Stevens aro passengers by the Wahine from Lyttelton, which is due ill port this morning. Dr. and Mrs. M'Gavin aro leaving by the Arawa next week on a trip to England. The following resignations were received by the Wellington Education Board yesterday; Mr. E. K. I.omas, assistant, Normal School, September 30; Mi'. B. 11. Low, assistant, Newtown, August 31; Miss I/ock, sole teacher, Weraiti Household School, Juno US. Mr. E. R. dunies-Ross, brother of tho Superintendent of the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean, is on a visit to Wellington. Mr. Ross is a grandson of Captain John Clunies-Ross, who took up his. abode in the group in 1825, and was for many years known as the "King of the Cocos Islands." O'Malley, assistantsecretary of tho Hotel-workers' Union, who is to bo married to-day, was tho recipient of presentations from members of the union and from his fellow secretaries at the Trades Hall. Mr. liobt. Jones, Dunedin, Mr. C. A. Seager, and Mr. Frank A. Brown, Auckland, members of the firm of Turnbull and Jones, ore at present in Wellington, stopping at tlio Grand Hotel. Major Stocklcy, of England, who lias many friends in different _ parts of New Zealand, is again in Wellington, staving at the Grand Hotel. Major Stockley paid a previous visit to New Zealand some years ago. Mr. T. Adair and Mr. Geo. H. Lysnar. Gi'sborne, are at present in AYellingtou, and aro staying at tho Empire Hotel. .Mr.'Chas. Bagley,' of Auclcland, is visiting Wellington, and'is slopping at the Empire Hotel. Mr. Raymond nepworth, of Christchurch, arrived in Wellington yesterday on business. lie is located at the Grand Hotel, and will return to the southern city by this evening's boat. Mr. J. B. Clurkson, of Christcliurch. is at present in AVellington, and is staving tho Grand Hotel. Mr. C. W. CniT, Sydney, who is tour-; ing the Dominion, returned from the north yesterday to Wellington. He is stopping at tho Grand Hotel. Tho death occurred rather suddenly at Fe-uthcrslon on Monday evening of Mr. Phillip Wills, at the ago of CO years. Tho late Mr. Wilis had only recently taken up residence in Pcatherston, baring purchased tho property known as "Newstead," formerly owned by tho late Mr. P. Monckton. Death was duo to heart trouble, from which (lie deceased had suffered oil and off for some years. Mr. Wills caino out to New Zealand some H years ago, and settled in Wellington, lie experienced the usual disadvantages ami trials of those piouearing days, and for a short time undertook road_ contracting work in the Manawatu district, but soon returned to Wellington. Many years ago he established tile Victoria Laundry, ill Hanson Street, which rapidly developed into one of (ho largest, businesses-of its kind iu the Dominion. When this was formed into a public company some three years ago, Mr. Wills retired from active participation in the concern. Mr. Wills' was - associated with the Primitive Methodist Church of this city, and was a trustoo of the Donald M'Lean Street Church, Newtown, for many years. His sympathy and liberal interest in association with this Church will be greatly missed. -Mi'. Wills was known to a wido circlo of friends for his kindly disposition and largo heartedness. Ho leaves a widow and two daughters (Mrs. Millnr, of Hastings, and Mrs. 11. Luke, of Wellington), and two sons (Messrs. W. and H. Wills), also of this city. Tho body was brought down from Pcatherston last evening, and taken to his late rosidenco ill Hiropi Street, from which place the funeral-will leave on Thursday morning at f1.30.
