LIFE ON THREEPENCE A DAY.
BY ONE WHO TRIED IT, Life on tlirceponce a day was described to members of tho Charity OrjjanisatiDn Society recently by Mr. F. J. Cross, who had tried it, and was able to speak from personal experience. His three meals a d«y «ero mado up thus:—Breakfast: Oatmeal ; hmcli: Beans, dates, toast, margarine, dripping, and potatoes; supper: ' rice and bread in various forms. His food for tho week cost Is. Bd. It consisted of three loaves of bread, lib. oatmeal, a pint of milk, lib. haricot beans, lib. dates, lib. rice, 2oz. dripping, soz. margarine, lib. potatoes, Alb. sugar, tea, pepper, salt* etc. That ought to have provided, according to his statistics, S-100 grammes of protein and 17,500 calories of energy. What it actually provided was 8020 grammes of protein and 17,270 calories of energy. It was very pleasant ami satisfying ..fare, and ..lie. never enjoyed a week more. It was a constant revelation from the first when ho was tempted to go back to his ordinary fare; but not after the first day—it was ?o satisfactory and so satisfying, no intended to try it again for a long period, so as to revive tho memories of that pleasant, time. The. working classes,, Mr. Cross said, always insisted on "tasty" food, and the bulk of it was meat food. Tn working men's clubs it was solemnly, believed that if Iho working classes were taught to live cheaply, wages would decrease instead of increasing, forgetting entirely that thrift aiways makes for the improvement of the position of the.working man.
