HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last night. Tho Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny) presided, and there were present: Councillors Hobbs, Bull, Phypers, Parsonage, Clendon, Kernpthorne, Meldruni, Hodgins, and Dawson. The engineer reported that two tarred crossings had been put in—ono from tho Central Hotel corner, Woburn Road, to Feist's, and across Laing'a Road from Post Oflicc to Williams's. Advantage was taken of tho last spell of fine weather to get these in. The weather was not good long enough to allow tho road at Grantham's and Jcnness's corner to get sufficiently dry to do this work there. The other'crossings will be put in as soon as possible. The engineer reported in connection with tho Temomi sewers that the sewer in Kiwi Street was now complete. At present only the house connections actually required had been laid, and there wore 28 sections unbuilt on, to which no connections had been put. The cost hind been ,£lO2, and to lay sowers in tho remainder of the estato would entail an expenditure of X7GO, including sewers in tho streets, and 123 side connections. Tho engineer also reported that ho was going on with the work of scarifying and repairing the Main Road, from Laing's Road to Brunswick Street. A further progress payment of .£2O, on account of the current year's grant, was passed to tho Hutt Park Committee. In reply to a question as to whether tho .£ISOO voted some timo ago to erect gas works in Lower Hutt was still available, the town clerk replied that the loan proposal was submitted to the ratepayers in two portions, .£9500 for the acquisition of the Petone plant in tho borough and extensions, and .£4500 separate for the erection of gas works. Both questions were carried, a.nd tho first portion of I lie loan was raised. Tho second portion was not, and it was now n question whether it could be raised, owing to the lapse of time.
