Mrs. Christina Cnllender, a recent arrival from New Zealand, was drowned at Thirroul, where sho was 6taying with a companion. Tho companion, on visiting Mrs. Calender's bedroom in tho morning, found her missing, and her body was discovered on tho beach. The deceased was described at the inquest as of eccentric habits. An open verdiot was returned.

OBITUARY. London, July 27. General Sir Harry Prendergast, V.C., is dead, aged 79. [The late Sir Harry Prendergast was born in India, and saw much active service with the Indian army, in Burma, and in the Abyssinian War. He was latterly Commandant of tho Royal Engineers. In 1858 he gained the Victoria Cross for gallantry while with the Central Indian Field Force.] THE POPE'S GUARD. (Sydney "Sun" Special.) 1 Rome, July 25. THE NIAGARA DISPUTE. Sydney, July 2G. It is hoped a settlement will be reached to-day of the trouble on the Union liner Niagara, in consequence of deductions from the engineers' pay. Later. The underwriters have received about sevonty-fivo per cent, of Elio South Australian loan of .£200,000. CHILD BURIED ALIVE. Adelaide, July 20. At an inquest on the body of tho newborn child, alleged to have boen buried alive at Millsword, the jury found that death had been caused through Dart, whose daughter tad given birth to the child, burying it, and added a rider that Dart, in 'his excitement, overlooked tUo fact that the child was olivo. Dart has been committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter. PORT PHILLIP ENTRANCE. Melbourne, July 20.
