DAY LABOUR V. CONTRACT.

A NEW SOUTH WALES RETURN. Br Telenaph—Press Association—Oopyriirht Sydney, July 26. A return compiled by the Chief Engineer of Railways shows that 401 miles of railway constructed under the contract system cost i£4309 per mile, whereas 767 miles built by day labour cost per mile. These figures are being used by Mr. Griffiths, Minister for Public Works, in support of the contention that day labour is the cheaper.
