THE MATCH NOTES & FIGURES. POSITIONS OF TEAMS. Hospital 7 Brooklyn 3 Thistle „ 7 Brooklyn Un, - 0 Y.M.C A 3 Swifts 3 St. John's 2 Diamonds 2 Wandorers 2 Rovers 0 Fino weather prevailed on Saturday afternoon with but little wind, and as a consequence the various senior "Soccer" games weire, generally, fairly well attended. Owing to the recent rain 3, several of the playing reserves -were inclined to be ft trifle bog?y. and this naturally did not tend to fast playing. Still some good games wore played, two teams, namely, Hospital an<l Thistle, scoring rather heavily against their respective opponents, Brooklyn and Brooklyn United. As usual, the eentro of attraction was', tho Basin Reserve, where a fair number of spectators gathered to watch the varying fortunes of the Brooklyn United-Thistle clash. Tho result was an easy victory for Thistle, and but for the excellent detente of the hillmen's goalkeeper, Belhamie, tho score might easily have been mors. Tho matches Y.M.C.A. v. Swifts and St. John's v. Diamonds both ended in draws, neither being remarkable for extraordinary brilliancy.
SWIFTS & Y.M.C.A, A fast, though somowhat loose ' game was played by Swifts and Y.M.C.A: ill the first half, and tIie'Y.M.C.A. men took advantage of this, and profited further by ono of the best assets in football—a favourable wind. They had slammed on three goals when the whistle 6ang "halftime." ' Swifts wanned to their work in the second spell, and gave their opponents a "hot time." "Y.M.'s" fought hard for victory, but Swifts wero reinforced to full strength, and the wind (now behind them) was blustering along more forcefully than before. Tho result at the finish was a draw. Swifts were the first to get tho ball between the posts, Vessey taking a "centre" from Mouat, and. scoring rather neatly. Y.M.C.A. then "shook matters up." Foote centred to W'hittington, and the latter placed. 1; Y.M.C.A., 1.: Combined piny between Whittington and Baker resulted in another.. goal i for Y.M.C.A. The Tiglit wing and Phillips then pu.t in somo excellent work, and succeeded. in. scoring. Y.M.C.A., 3; Swifts, 1. Vessey was responsible for two more goals, and the game thus resulted in a draw. Mr. A. E. Wills was refeTee. . '
DIAMOND & ST. JOHN'S. Only mediocro football was shown by Diamonds v. St. John's fixture. Both elevens apparently loft whatever stock of combination they had. at lioino. Opportunities came, lingered a second or two, were unimproved, and then faded off into the vast vague limbo of "things that might have been. The redeeming feature in the game was vim, and even this was patchy. At the finish it was merely a case of "as vou were"—neither, side, nad got ■a„ ;go#l through. St: •Jo'hn's have 'sulfeted several losses lately,, and the "new chuma" are not This was particularly no-' ticeable in the case of their centre forward,'whoVpl&yttTk very poor game. Once, ■when within a few yards of the jwsts, ho rhot for goal and sent the ball flying over tho bar. Dick, on the riglit wing, played a good .game, but Farrell, on the other hand, roved and Toamed a lot, and gave Swifts several easy openings. St. John's opened uro with a rush that resulted in a "corner: Bruce took the kick and cento Gosncy, who had no trouble in sooring. St. John's, 1; Swifts, 0. Play was kept well up in the Black's territory, and 600n another opportunity of scoring occurred. The ball was centred to Plant, and, with nobody but the goalkeeper to beat, he shot. The ball flew oveT the bar. Half-time found the scores unchanged. The second half, opened with a fairly strong wind blowing, and, with little difficulty, tho two Lowes succecded in evening up matters. It was an excellent) piece of work—practically, the only combined play of any account that was seen in tho game. From tli is on St. John's attacked hard, but a frce-kick was awarded against them, and being well placed by Ferguson, was forced through. A desperate' endeavour on the part of . St. John's gave Plant a chance to redeem his previous play. He tcolc full advantage-of it, and was successful in bringing the scores level—St. John's, 2; Swifts, 2. Time found the score the same. Mr. Newbold was refeTes.
THISTLE & BROOKLYN UNITED. Thistle defeated Brooklyn United by 7 goals to nil on the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon and thus- won the 1913 championship. It wa9 practically "all over bar shouting" in the first spell. Thistlo did all the attacking right through, and it was only on one or two . occasions that Brooklyn United got with- : in striking distance. The men from the ; hill suburb were too slow and did not \ make the best of their opportunities. , - '!PJiistle found their opponents "easy," nnifi' jn fact, they did as they pleased. On tho fchole it was a disappointing display. It hart been anticipated that tho game would be \ii good one, but as things turned out, the tiight or nine hundred onlookers only saw\ a boresome lump of nothing—nothing liKje "soccer," at all events. During the' first fivo minutes Thistle had several chances, but did' not take them.. .Time and time again, however, they went at their opponents' goal only to be bowled back, by Belhamie, who was in splendid trim.: In quick succession Loadsmnn and Gibson banged the ball in without result. After this a lengthy spell of uninteresting plav took place in mid-field, mid then Thistlo again got going. The result was that Loadsmnn swung the ball out to Barnelt on the left and the latter centred nicely to Gibson. The big centre forward made no mistake. Thistle, 1; Brooklyn United, 0. Still attacking. Thistlo attempted further scores, M'Ardle and Leadsman making things warm for _ poor Belhamie. Later M'Ardle secured in a good nosition and banged in a capital goal. Tlnstle, 2; Brooklyn United, 0. The second spell was Thistle's all the way and they rattled on five more goals before the whistle blew. The scorers were: Rickerbv, Ait> che.=on, Gib?on, and Leadsman. Mr. F. O'Connell was referee.
HOSPITAL & BROOKLYN. Brooklyn journeyed to Porirua on Saturday and met and were defeated b.v Hospital to the tune of 7 goals to 3. Hospital won all the way, but had it not been for careless play on tho homo team's part, Brooklyn would not have put up the score they did. In the first snell Skinner and Heath scored for Hospital and Hill for Brooklyn. One of Hospital's goals were scored by a Brooklyn man. In the second half Hill and Morris scored for Brooklyn and Hughes, who was in great shooting form, scored four goals for Hospital. Mr. Duffy was referee. WANDERERS & ROVERS. The niatch between Wanderers and Hovers, played at Wakefield Park, was a very poor affair, play being dreary and uninteresting .throughout. Wanderers started fairly well, and hotly besieged their opponents' goal. The result was tho scoring of two goals—one each by O'Shea and ttogers. O'Shca's scoring shot was a very fino one. Rovers were attacking during the greater part of the second Bpell, but did not succeed in scoring. Tho game ended: Wanderers, 2; Eovers, 0. BROWN SHIELD. THE LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES.
