THEIR BLOT ON CHILD LIFE.
(By Iteloeraph.—Spooial Oorrcsrondont,! Wanganul, July 26. Spooking at a meeting of tho Wanganui Orpnanajjo Committee on tho respective merits of Government and privately conducted orphanages Mr. W. J. Treadwell (chairman) made souio remarks to tho of-' feet that there is a good deal of truth in tho assertions sometimes mado that Government institutions aro completely lacking in tlw homo "atmosjiliero' and home spirit. Ho hoped, ho said, that tho day is far distant when the Wanganui Orphanage would bccomo a Government institution as tho latter killed all tho "home feeling" that was in a child, and instead of uplifting it and widening its prospect in lifo, pavo it a handicap wliicli, lasted through life. Mr. Treadwell (who. is a lawyer by profession) said that lio had had "a great deal of experienco with peoplo who had passed through Govern- : ment homes, and was sorry to say tli&t; lie liad found that a great many of tho children turned out from thorn had boeomo criminals in aftor lifo.
