CIVIC AFFAIRS.
The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held last night. There wero present the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), Councillors E. Fletcher, A. 11. Hindmarsh, M. Luckie, W. J. Thompson, E. 'I'regear, H. Buddie, J. Fuller jun., J. Godber, T. C. A. Hislop, G. Frost:. J. E. Fitzgerald, L. M'Kenzie, J. Barber, A. R. Atkinson, and R. A. Wright. The Finance Committee recommended that the Wad'estowii Municipal' Electors' Association bo informed, in reply to their request to have tho proposed NgaioWadestown footbridge proceeded with, that tho council would consider this matter later in conjunction with the Onslow Borough Council. The recommendation was adopted. The Reserves Committee recommended: "That consent be granted to tho sale of certain land belonging to tho Kelburno and Karori Tramway Company not required for tramway ■ purposes, and that the council join with the compari/ in a memorial' to the Minister for. Public Works for that purpose, as advised by the city solicitor."
The Oriental Bay Kiosk Company are to be informed that if they pay tho estimated cost of the work of laying out the gardens at the Kiosk (,£l2O 10s.) the council will carry out the work. The city engineer was instructed to have a telephone erected at each taxistand. The engineer's proposal for the extension of the Electric Light Department's building at Mercer Street was approved. Tlie applicants for improvements to the bank at Sydney Street are to bo in'forraed that the council cannot see its way to accede to their request. Mr. Donald M'Lean's claim for compensation for land at Roy Street required to be taken fror» him for .tramway purposes was refused.) The matter is to bo settled by- the Assessment Court. A complaint from Dr. G. Anson, with reference to alleged overcharging by taxicab drivers was referred to the By-laws Committee. The By-laws Committee presented a series of by-laws dealing with prevention of fire,' cleanliness of markets, motorcar stands, and unprotected lnit-pins. A summary of these has already been published. The by-laws were approved.
What is to be done .with the money raised by the Citizens' Easter Carnival will be finally settled at a meeting of tho trustees to be held in the Mayor's room at o p.m. to-day. The City Council is having a report prepared by tho fire brigade superintendent on the whole of the volunteer • fire brigades within tho city. The City Council decided last night that the section of land opposito the Town Hull and adjoining the Central Eire Station in Cuba Street should bo reserved for future extension of the fire station.
