MASTERTON NOTES.
In the gentlemen's recitation section at the Jlasterton competitions on Wednesday Mr. K. E. Shorney, of Wellington, shared with Mr. Norman Aitken the honour of securing first place, the judge stating that, although neither of the renderings of the piece was without fault, he was unable to separate them. The cross-country championship in connection with the harriers, which is lo be decided on Saturday, is being looked forward to with interest. Tho finish will be on the old showgrounds. The combined Friendly Societies of Masterton held their annual social in the Drill Hall this evening. Most of the local bodies in this district are appointing delegates to form part of a deputation to wait upon the Minister for Public Works on July 31, in reference to the deviation qf the Eimutaka line. Tho Jlasterton competitions conclude to-morrow night with a big demonstration in the Town Hall, The festival has, so far,' been a record for the society in every respect. . . Klieep showed a hardening tendency at tho local stock sales yesterday. Breeding ewes fetched as much as dEI is. Gd.
