FIRE BRIGADE DEMANDS.

? COUNCIL INCREASES WAGES. Tho City Council last night adopted tf report from tho Fire Brigades Committee, which practically grants to tho firemen tho demands mado when tho Fire Brigi ades' Union.was formed some weeks back, Tho men receive an increase of ss.' petf week on existing rates, with a maximum of .£2 12s. Gil. for senior firemen and an increase of 7s. Gd. per week for motors men, with a maximum of 'S3 Gs. Fourteen dny-s' leave on full pay arc granted, .with' one hour's special leave each week, and every sixth day leave to be granted from 12 noon to 12 midnight., provided that en. holidays and Sundays leavo ahalil ba from 10 a.m.

in the agreement a preference clausa is inserted, to the effect that all permanent employees within one month of being permanently employed'shall become members of the union, the entrance fee not to oxceed ss. and tho subscriptions fid. per week. Neither probationers nor officers ares required to join the union. An employee failing to join within the stipulated time shall bo dismissed. The union shall not become affiliated with any trades organisation. The date of tho agreement slinll bo for tvo years, ftvTtl August 1 next.
