PERSONAL ITEMS.
The Hon. J. Allen (Minister for Finance), who has suffered severely from the effects of vaccination, has been confined to his bsd during the last day or two, and he has not yet been in the House this week. Ho may be able to attend for a time to-day. It is possible that Mr. Allen's indisposition will delay tho appearance of the Financial Statement for a short period, The death is announced from Greymouth of Mr. F. W. Iveddcll, son of tho late Major Jackson ICcddcll, of Oamaru, and a brother of Mr. G. P. Keddcll, of Southland, tho brilliant hurdler. Tho deceased, who leaves a widow and soven children, was secretary for many 3'ears of tho Greymouth Opera Houso Company, secretary of tho Grey School Committee, and of tho Westlaud Boxing Association. Mr. Edward Newman, M.P., has been re-elected chairman of the Lands Committee of the. House of Representatives. Mr. G. V. Pcarce. M.P., has been rcoiected chairman of the Local Bills Committee. Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson, who escaped from the fire at Island Bay on Monday morning,, are still confined to bed. M,r. Wilkinson's faco and head and Mrs. Wilkinson's legs were severely burned, and both are suffering from sprained backs, caused by the drop from an upstairs window. Mr. 'Wilkinson is expected to bo able to leave bed ill a day or two.
Dr. Martin has returned to town from Titahi Bay. Mr. J. E. Burt, Wellington manager for Messrs. A. and T. Burt, Ltd., who is to leave for England to-<lay, was yesterday afternoon the recipient of a presentation from the Wellington Master Plumbers' Association, of tlis executive of which ho lias been a very onergotic member. Tho presentation, which- consisted of a leather-bound autograph album, inscribed with tho names of the members of the association, was made by tho president (Mr. Geo. Remington), who wished Mr. and Mrs. Burt a pleasant voyage, a happy time in England, and a speedy return to Wellington. In his reply Mr. Burt intimated that ho wished tlio association .all success, and if there were any things ho could do on the other side of tho world to forward its interests ho would do them. , • Mr. ! Walter Eglin has-been appointed manager of tho Wellington branch of Messrs. A. and T. Burt and Co.. Ltd., in succession to Mr. John E. Burt, who is leaving for England by tho Eemuera today to take up the position of London manager, vice Mr. James Burt, who is returning to New Zealand.
Colonel Knox, Qunrtermaster-Giencral of tho New Zealand Forces, has been advised by cablegram of tho sudden death in London of his father, tile flight Ifcn. Ralph Henry Knox, P. 0.,. K.C.8., V.D., later Permanent Under-Secretary for War. The- Into Sir Ralph Knox was barn in Ireland in April, 1836, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Ifo entered tho War Office in 1856, and tliero became Accountant-General in 1882, a position which ho occupied for fifteen years. He was appointed Permanent Under-Secretary of State for War in IS!>7, and retained that post until 1901. . Ho was a member of tho committee which worked out Lord Card well's scheme of Army reform, and was a member of Royal Commissions on Indian Financial Relations (1896), Civil Scrvico Superannuations (1902), and Militia and Volunteers (190S). He was chairman of the Civil Service 'Benevolent Fund and a honorary major of the South Middlesex Rifle Volunteers. One of the oldest ministers of tho Presbyterian Church of Victoria, tho Rev. D. 8. M'Eachran, died at Auburn last weelc, after a brief illness.
