TRENTHAM RACES.

WINTER MEETING.

FIVE WINS TO TILLEY'S TEAM.

JULY STEEPLECHASE.

THE NATIVE SCORES EASILY

Drizzling showers at Trentham did not add to the pleasure of those who set out to witness the second day's racing in connection with the AA'ellington Racing Club's AVinter meeting, but the weather did not act as a deterrent to many, and the crowd seemed as big as any ever seen at a previous winter fixture at the club's course. Those present included his Excellency the Governor (the Earl of Liverpciol) and party, the Primo Minister (tho Hon. AV. F. Mossey), the Hon. AV. 11. Ilerries, and the Hon. A. L. Herdman. The success of four actual favourites and two second favourites sent the money through tho machine again and again, until, at the end of the day, the sum of £30,156 10s. had been handled. But for the success of the rank outsider (Grit Lawless) in the Hunters' Steeplechase, by which about wC3OOO would be "cornered," the returns would probably have been still larger. Tho total investments for the two days amounted to .£56,034, or nearly .£22,000 more than tho total tor the same meeting last year. As on the opening day, a number of falls occurred in tUe jumping events, but not one was attended with serious consequences. In the principal race—the Juiy Steeplechase—The Native, wno was a pronounced favourite, scored very easily, as did llaskayne in the Parliamentary Handicap, and Darby l'aul in the Final Hurdles. An outstanding feature of the two days' racing was the success of horses from F. Wiley's i-ordell stable. The trainer named brought three horses to Trentham—lvilrain, Kaniki, and kew— and in six starts they scored tivo firsts and a second. AV. Price, who has long been associated with the stable, had.lour of the winning mounts. AVindage was first over the double in front of the stand, and was followed by AVaiaio, Daylight Bill, and Bismarck, whilo Tiere Riro Atu ran off. Tim Doolan and Grit Lawless were a long way behind at this stage, but both put in gjeat runs, and half a mile from home they had closed on the leaders.
