RIPA ISLAND STORIES.
DEFI3NCE MINISTER SCEPTICAL. A question as to the state of affairs at tho moment at Ripa Island was addressed to tlio Minister for Defence (the Hon. .Tas. Allen) in tlio llouso of Representatives yesterday by Mr. G. Witty, M.P., who read the following telegram l from a Christchurch resident:— "Visited liipa Island to-day. Find 1 that contrary Cabinet instruction boys again punished, refusing military work. Boys doing sappers' work on mainland discover its military natnro and refuse to continue. Lieutonaut MDonald admits it is military work, but punishes nino boys by refusing visitors.—(Signed) M'Combs." Tho Prime Minister and several other members received telegrams similarly worded. . . The Hon. Jas. Allen said that ho waj informed that these boys had been put tg work which was not military work, anq had done it for two days. Afterwards they refused to work, and instruction!!' wcro given to bring them before a Magistrato. 110 did not know what had happened since. As far as ho could mal« out those boys wanted to do exactly ns they liked, and, of course, they could not be allowed to do that. Mr. Witty: Tho lieutenant admits that' it was military work. Mr. Allen: I don't accept that statement. Statements sent to me by these people must be verified, every one, before I will accept them. (Hear! Hear!) Mr. Isitt: But the Minister will inquiro into it?
