JOTTINGS FROM ALL SOURCES WANGANUI. The medical superintendent of the Wanganui Hospital Toported at Wednesday's meeting of the board that for the month ending June 30, 147 patients wove treated in the hospital; 79 admitted, and G8 discharged. l'hero were six deaths, and 73 patients remain under treatment. Several patients had to wait for admission owing to the overcrowded state of the institution, Six cases of diphtheria were admitted, and one of scarlet fever. There is only one scarlet fever case in the hospital, ana unless a new caso is admitted the fever wards can be olosed very shortly. The general health of the inmates at the Jubilee Home continues satisfactory. DANNEVIRKE. Arbor Day was not celebrated in Danlievirke by either the Beautifying Society or the public schools. In fact, nobody seemed to know that it was Arbor Day, or, if they did, they did not bother. In connection with the planting of reserves, however, the committee of the Dannevirko Beautifying Society hold a meeting yesterday afternoon, to consider the method and design of planting the small reserve opposite the railway platform, and other matters. . Tho' ilangatera bridge on the Weber bridge, which has been raised four feet by tne Dannevirke County Council, has been reopened to traffic, a fact which will, no doubt, Ifc appreciated by the public travelling on this road. PAHIATUA. The ladies' reading room at the Pahiatua Publio Library was opened for the first timo yesterday. The following telegram, was received by Mr. Edward Baucke, president of tho Progressive Association, from Mr. J. H. Escott, M.P., on Wednesday-.—"Thirds will not bo charged Mangatainoka. Arrangements have teen made with the Public Works Department to construct tho roads, and money is provided to enable them to be proceeded with.—(Signed' J. H. Escott." Mr. E. Smith, of Onslow Park (Pahiatua), who-has been confined to his bed for a considerable time, is now lying seriously ill. TAIHAPE. Tho number of suppliers to the Taihapa Dairy Company's factory increased by ten during last season, and a further increase is expected this season. Since the company commenced' operations in 1905 the butter-fat received has increased from 120,7891b. to 240,8021b.; the quantity of butter manufactured showed an increaso from 138,3121b. to 281,5081b.; and tho average price paid for butter-fat an increase from 9.72 d. to 11.38 d. per lb. At the annual meeting of the Taihape Dairy Company, three extraordinary vacancies on the board of directors (caused by tho retirement of Messrs. Prime, Stent, and Gallagher), and two vacancies (caused by the retirement by rotation of Messrs. Manson and Goodrick), were filled as follow.—Messrs. R. Campbell, J. M'Cartin, Joseph M'Cracken, H. D. Bennett, and G. 13. Goodriok (reelected). Messrs. A. Chatfield (chairman) and J. Donovan oompleto the board. MARTINBOROUGH. At the ordinary monthly meeting of tho Martinborough Town Board,, a letter waa received from Mr. A. O. Considine, tendering his resignation as a commissioner, on account of ill-health. He also informed tho board that ho was making a gift to the Martinborough people for recreation purposes of four acres of land fronting Princess and Dublin Streets; also he would make an offer to tho board of a framed enlarged photograph of himself. The announcement was received with acclamation by the commissioners, and the thanks of the board was accorded to Mr. Considine for his generosity. Mr. Gordon M'AUum has been appointed to fill the vacancy in tho local Union Bank oaused by the transfer of M,r. C. Milium to Hastings. GREYTOWN. At the monthly meeting of the Greytown Fire/Brigade, held in the Fire Brigade Hall' on Monday evening, Captain Gates presiding, the following were proposed as members:—L. Lyster, N. Grigg, H. Hood, J. Benton, M. Walsh, and W. Barr. W. Gilliland was elected a member, and W. Beard and P. Bouiaid as messengers. _ Fireman A. Fisher tendered his resignation, which was accepted with regret. Correspondence received from the Borough' Council notified that a grant of JGIO had been passed for the brigade funds.
A surprise was sprung on Greytown last week at a challenge being received from Ahikouka for a match at that oncepopular game, ping pong, six aside, and there was a flutter to get together a few of the old players. On Tuesday night the match came off, and resulted in a win for Greytown by 24 games to 12, and 375 points to 335. Ahikouka was represented by Miss Gazley, Miss L. Feast, W. J. least, William Feast, T. Orr, and T. Appleby, while the Greytown champions were Jliss Tocker, Balfour, H. Feast, H. F. Webster, A. E. Feast, and H. Tocker. FEATHERSTON. , The statement of Geoffrey Edward Pur cell, butcher, of Featherßton, who haß been adjudged bankrupt, shows that the total debts amounted to =2509, and the assets,to .£5lO, leaving an estimated surplus of .£3l. A poll of ratepayers is to be taken on August 20 in connection with, the proposal of the Town Board to raise a loan of ,£SOO to effect improvements to tho Town. Hall. - ' In response to their advertisement for a cheese factory manager, tho Otaraia Dairy Company received fully forty applications for the position. The number was cut down to two by the directors, and Mr. Moffat, of Wanganui, was finally chosen for tho position. CARTERTON. Mr. J. J. Mead, Carterton, has just received'a novel present from England. It is a fine salmon caught by Mr. J. Stuckey on his place at North Devon. It was sent out in the freezing chamber of the Arawa, and is in splendid, condition, looking as if it was caught yosterday. Arbor Day was celebrated in Carterton by tho scholars of the school, who planted ■ a number of young trees presented by Mr. C. Phillips. These will make tho nucleus of a shrubbery at the old schoolgrounds. Mr. Stevenson Wright (stationmaster at Carterton), who has been promoted to Waipuknrau, and Mrs. Wright were farewelled at a "social" in St. Mark's Sunday schoolroom l'ast evening. Singing, dancing, and , oard games formed a pleasant evening's enjoyment, and during an interval Mr. F. I'eist (Mayor) gavo a short valedictory address on behalf of those present. The Mayor also took the occasion to welcome Mr. Hunt, llr. Wright's successor, and Mrs. Hunt, who were present. LEVIN. The annual goneral meeting of tho shareholders of the Levin Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, was held in tho Forester's Hall, Levin, on Wednesday. Mr. Jas. Prouse occupied the chair. The balance-shteot and Teport wero received and approved. A dividend of 0 per cent. wa9 declared on paid-up capital. Messrs. Wm. Read and W. 11. Becher are the newly-appointed directors, Mr. Read taking office for the second time. Mr. J. D. Brown retired from the directorate; One more triumph of tho East over the West; this time in Levin. Quite a number of Maoris were at the railway station on Wednesday, en route for the Wellington races, but they found that a punctured arm had to be produced in addition to the usual punctured railway ticket as passport. A 9 tho first notification that tho vaooination of Natiws wavs compulsory was only given on tho previous day, the Maoris did not know of the inhibition against them, and consequently, not being avcciuatcd, had to stop off the train. Meanwhile, smiling inscrutably (says the "Chronicle") a local Chinaman gazed from the platform of a railway ciirriago upon tiro group of expostulating Naties.
