LAND SEEKERS.
■ —« ' THE HANGATAINOKA BALLOT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Pahiatua, July 17. Pahiatua 19 at 'present crowded with land-seekers, no fewer than 372 applicants having entered for the Mangatainoka land ballot". The applicants are drawn from all parts of the Dominion, comprising young men and old men and women with babies in their arms. The block, which is situated in a fork of the Manawahu and Mangahao Rivers, adjacent to the railway, comprises 1616 acres of firstclass dairying land, and has been cut up into 22 sections, ranging from 48 to 138 acres. A large number of the applioants have entered for several sections, some of them being for quite as many as ten, and it is estimated that the total number of applications, therefore, must run into over four figures. The Land Board commenced an examination of applicants this morning, and continued right throughout the day, rejecting all those who were not landless and did not comply with the conditions. The examination is still proceeding, and it is hoped to conclude to-night, but this is doubtful. The ballot, which was set down for to-day, has consequently been postponed until to-morrow.
