FOOTBALL. . HAWKE'S BAY & .WAIRARAPA. (By Telegraph—Special Corwepondant.) Masterto'n, July 17. A representative football match between Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay was played on the old Show Grounds at Masterton this afternoon in ideal weather. The game was witnessed by about a thousand .spectators, and the match was evenly contested, Hawke's Bay ■ having the ■ advantage in the first-spell and'Wairarapa in the second. The scores for both sides should have been larger than were recorded. The Kev. B. Aslicroft acted as referee. The first'swire resulted, from a soruin in front of. the Wairarapa goal, where P. Holder snapped up the leather and' dropped a fine goal, amidst cheers. Hawke's Bay, 4; Wairarapa, nil. Play for the remainder of the spell was exciting, but the score remained unaltered. At the opening of the second spell play was confined & the centre of the field. The Wairarapa forwards then carried the leather into the Blacks twehty-five,Where a sories of scrums took place. C. Welch took a'rather easy pot in front of Hawke's Bay goal, but missed. Lice play followed, and the Greens again assumed the aggressive. Two successive rushes were made, and scores were only averted by the judicious kicking of Smyck and Johnston. Play .was then taken to the centre, and a penalty-kick was awarded Hawe's Bay in the Wairarapa twentyfive, but Curtayue failed. The Green forwards then made a series of forward rushes, and were once or twice within an ace of scoring. At.length, from an open scrum, the leather was passed out to C. Groube, who made a dodgy run, and secured a try for Wairarapa, amidst great enthusiasm. Tho Temainder of the spell was slightly in favour of Wairarapa, though Hawke's Bay made one or two determined rushes. The score, however, was not altered. ■ MAORIS AND SOUTHLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Invercargill, July 17. The Maori team yesterday beat the Southland representatives by 8 points (two tries, one converted) to 5 points (a converted try). The weather was very showery, and the ball difficult to handle. Southland had the Maoris on the defence for most of the game, and were rather unfortunate in' losing. ' THE LEAGUE GAME. HEADQUARTERS SHIFTED HERE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, July 17. The Provincial Rugby League delegates passed a resolution favouring a transfer of headquarters to Wellington by U to 4. The Wellington R|igby representative team has decided to accept an Auckland referee for Saturday's match with Auckland. Probably Mr. George Nicholson >ill be appointed. LACROSSE. SATURDAY'S MATCHES. Tho third round of the Proud Cup competition will be concluded at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Tho match between Capitol and Kclburnc is creating great interest, as the result will hare an important bearing on the championship, and each team has previously defeated the other this season. Wellington will be pitted against Columbia, whose fino attaoking combination should give a good display. Both matches will commence at 3 o'clock, and prior tlfcrcto (commencing at 2.15 p.m.), a junior grade match will bo played. All beginnors and intending players will bo given an opportunity of joining in this game, and will be coached by senior players in tho finer points of lacrosse. CRICKET. GENTLEMEN AND PLATERS. The Players in their first innings scored 210, while their opponents (who scored 232 in their first innings) 'in their second venture put on 102. Barnes took seven wickets for 38. The Players in their second innings lost threo wickets for 12G, Hobbs (not out) 72. . HOCKEY. NORDON" CUP MATCH. (From 'Our Special Correspondents.) Masterton, July 17.
