Tho death is reported' from Patea. of Mr. Gervaso D. Hammerton, one of tho oldest settlers in the district, and a brother uf Mr. E. C. Hammerton, of Wellington. He succumbed to an attack of pneumonia following on pleurisy. 1 Mr. E. M'K. M'Lennan, manager at Dunedin for tho Canadian-Australian and San Francisco miail services, returned from San Francisco by the Moana yesterday. Tho Hon. Sir George M'Leau's absence from tho Earing Conference was referred to yesterday by Mr. George Hunter, M.P., who moved: "That the conference expresses its regret at his absence through ill-health, and hopes that he will make a complete and speedy recovery." The resolution was seconded by the Hon. 0. Samuel, ML.C., and carried unanimously. It was subsequently conveyed to the Hon. Sir George M'Lcan by telegram. Mr. A. A. M'Kellar has been reappointed auditor to tho New Zealand liacing Conference. The following nurses have passed ' the final examination at tho Wellington Hospital;— Nurses A. H. Blake, B. S. Greig, H. Pope, I, J. Stitclibury, M. M'Mnhou, W. Earle, E. F. Martin, I. G. Boyd, A. E. Finnerty, E. E. Bursill, W. Werdcr, and M. Boyd. Charge-nurses C. G. Chapman and G. Ward have resigned. Dr. J. S. Elliott has been appointed surgeon, on the honorary stall of tho Wellington Hospital, in ' place of Dr. M'Gavin. It is expected that the new chief of the Salvation Army, General Braimvell Booth, will visit tlio Dominion in 1915. Commissioner Lamb, one of the London headquarters of the Salvation Army, who has been inspecting tho work of tlio organisation in tho Dominion, arrived in Wellington yesterday morning, and will leave by the Sydney boat this afternoon. He has spent eighteen days in New Zealand. Commissioner Lamb spent the day examining the Army's institutions, and interviewing the staff-officers,' Tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board decided yesterday to thank Mrs. H. Camiijer for tho donation of a home kinematograph, and Harrington's New Zealand, Ltd., for the gift of one quarter's subscription to tlio Pathescope Film Library, to tho Children's Hospital. Mr. C. Cubbage, of San Francisco, was a passenger from the Califomian port to Wellington by tho Moana yesterday. , Mr. W. S. Crichton, .who is interested in the frozen meat trade, arrived from England by the Moana.yesterday. Mr. D. B. Hill, a Hawke's Bay station owner, returned from 'Ifcihiti: by tho Moana yesterday. Mr. S. D. Slielton, of Auckland, was a passenger by the same vessel. Mr. Percy A. Fildes, who served his apprenticeship in the foundry of Messrs. Luko and Son, and wlio has been connected with the Public Works Department, Sydney, as engineer in charge ond chief inspector of scaffoldings and lifts, has recently received advice of Ilia appointment as an associate member of tho Institution of Electrical Engineers, England. Mr. J. S. Purdy, brother of Dr. J. K. Purdy, of the Lower Hutt, has resigned the position of Chief Health Officer for Tasmania in order to tako up a similar position in the metropolitan area of NewSouth Wales.
