STUD STOCK FOR. AMERICA.

LACK OP TRANSPORT. The opening up of a market for stud stock in South America was suggested to tho Government recently by the member for Ashburton (Mr. W. Nosworthy). His proposal was that the Government should take steps to charter a ship and placo it at the disposal of stud breeders for the purpose of conveying stud sheep, cattle, aud horses to Pnnta Arenas. ; Tho Hon. W T . F. Massey (Prime Minister) replied that if good shipping faicilities and suitable freight charges were available, a profitable and permanent markot for stud stock from New Zealand ought to be obtainable in South America; but the present position does not warrant the chartering of a steamer, which would have to be of considerable size, and for which little, if any, return freight would be available. It is understood that the practice of steamers from New Zealand to Great Britain calling at J?unta Arenas was abandoned, owing to the additional insurance charges payable on ships passing through the Strait of Magellan. The whole question will bo further gone into with a view to determining whether anything can be done by the Government in the direction of developing tho trade.
