THE POLICE COACH.
HIS APPOINTMENT QUESTIONED. The recent appointment of a police conch, to assist tlioso members of the force who intend to sit for examinations,'-' was the subject-matter of a. question addressed to the Minister for Justice in the House of Renrosentatives vesterdav bv Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P. Mr. Wilford asked whether applications were called for the important and well-paid appointment ve- 1 cently conferred on Mr. Robert Darroch, and. if not, w.hy not? The Hon. A. L. Ilerdman replied':—Mr. Robert Darroch lws not been appointed to any important or well-paid position, lie lias been engaged bv the Commissioner of Police to coach by correspondence those members of. the force who are preparing to sit for the examination qualify, ing them for promotion to a higher rani;, which is to be held in September next. The gentleman in question is headmaster of tho Roseneat.h School, and liis abilities a-! an instructor have been well tested. In this case there was no need to call for applications, as from inquiries made it was found that the experience of the Post and Telegraph Department showed that Mr. Darroch was admirably qualified to conduct tho teach ing. For a nuinl>er of years lie has coaclied oflicers of that Department by means of the correspondence system, with .great success ami to the entire satisfaction of those in charge. Mr. Darroch commenced his duties .011 May 1 last, and his contract is to instruct up ISO non-commissioned officers and men in various parts of, the Dominion at a remuneration of .CO 3s. per week.
