HOME-COMING OF SIR J. G. WARD. (By Correspondent,J Hastings, July IG. Supporters of Sir Joseph Ward succ'eeded in inducing the Jlnyor of Hastings to call a public meeting for the purpose of considering «'liat' steps should b» taken locally in the direction of welcoming the px-l'riine Minister 011 his- return to the Dominion. About 25 persons attended, mid came to the conclusion that they shuuld either send an individual telegram of*welcome to Sir Joseph or should jointly sign a telegram that had been prepared and brought to the meeting. There was 0110 discordant note in the otherwise harmonious proceedings. Sir. Eustace Lane attended and protested against a gathering of swell a nature being treated as a public affair. He claimed that Sir Joseph Ward had gone to England as a private-citizen, and wfis returning as suen, and if aiiv section of the community desired to weiccme him they shoulddo so as his supporters frcsn a political point of view, lie claimed that llawke r Bay had nothing for which to thank Sir Joseph Ward.
