THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. TO-DAY'S RACES AT TEENTHAM. IBy Gil-scon. 1 Big iiclils will be tlie order at Trenthani to-day, ;iml u* class is well represented, line weather will be the only condition wanting to attract largo crowds to the racecourse, and make tho day's sport it success. Special train arrangements aro announced, and irom To Aro departure will be taken at 10.-<S a.m. and 10.18 a.m. l''rom Lambton Station trains will leave at 10.23 a.m., 10.45 a.m., 11.5, and 1.10 p.m. On tho return journey "specials" will leave the racecourse at frequent intervals irom -1.10 onwards. Tho opening event is (he Stewards' Handicap, which, will probably be contested, by a field of nineteen runners. Any public form is likely to be upset for the handicap is a very Mattering one, and no less than nine ol the runners aro on the minimum. Horses that liavo galloped well since arriving at headquarters aro J'.capuki, Tamainupo, and Jvaniki. The two last-named showed to special advantage ill the final "try outs" yesterday morning. In the Hack and Hunters' Steeples, 2J miles, form points to Nappcr Tandy, winner of an open stoeplechaso at Gisborue, and I'ireworfcs, who was successful iu tho llack Steeples at Mapier. Some very promising material figures in. this race, and it may bo expected that tho majority of the field will negotiato tho course with safety. In this respect tho event will bo in marked contrast to the steeplechases decidod at other meetings this season. / , The two-year-olds are likely to 1)0 in most demand for tlio Trial Plate. Adolicia, who carries tho Highden colours, finished alongside Nyland yesterday morning after picking him up tho last four furlongs- of a mile gallop. Paulova will be the sole representative of the Porirua stables. Lyrique will carry tho "all cerise" colours of tho Hon. -T. D. Ormond, and Sir Moselcy will run for Mr. I'. 2s eagle. The last-named and Held Forco will bo the best backed.

With these events decided tho way ' will then bo cleared for tho Wellington ' Steeples, three miles and a quarter. It is safe to say that a better field has never , contested this race. This is no doubt duo to the wise policy of the club in giving .£'7so in stake money. Tho well-treated ' Glenniore is No.' 1 on the card. Previous 1 Trent limn form docs not inilicato that : the Marton horse is good in heavy going ! uiid he may lose his position, as favour- ■ ito to The Spaniard. The Native has 1 been working well, but tho distance may find him out. Hauterc is too uncertain : a customer and 151 Dorado can hardly be 1 ready. A similar remark appljcs to Hoanga, but Dorando ■ and The ' Spaniard will both strip "very fit." Of the others , Nadro, who is very well handicapped, may be tho most dangerous. The following aro tho probable starters and their riders;—Glenniore, list. 3lb. (W. Adams); Tho Native, list. lib. (H. M'Swceney); Ilautere, list. lib. (11. Thompson); El Dorado, list. (11. Coker); Hoanga, lOst. 131b. (J. Deerey); The Spaniard, lOst. lllb. (A. Julian); Dorando, lOst. 91b. (A. Gordon); Leolanter, lOst. 21b. (11. Futcher); Waitarere, 9st. 13lb. (J. Hughes); Lugeon, 9st. 121b. (H. Gray); Red M'Gregor, 3st. 101b. (J. O'Conuell); Nedra, 9st, 91b. (W. ,T. Porter); Donzel, 9st. 71b. (L. Traill); Kia Ora, 9st. 71b. (P. Feilding); Fond Memory, 9st. 7lb. (W. Taylor); Bismarck, 9st. 71b. (T. Jones); Sportsman, 9st. 71b. (J. Ellis). Attention will next lie turned to the Parliamentary Handicap, one mile and a quarter. The following are the starters ami their riders:—Haskayne. lOst. 71b. (W. Ryan); Awahou, lOst. 51b. (Mr. M. Bull); Domino, lOst. 31b. (J. O'Sh'ja); Sir Knox, lOst. 2lb. (B. Deeley); Phroso, 9st. 131b. (1?. Young); Diavolo, 9st. 121b. (H. Telford); Vi, 9st. 10lb. (M'Millan); Ceylon, 9st. Gib. (S. Reid); Otaliu, 9st. 51 b. (If. Lambess); Bonnie Boy, 9st. 51b. (W. Bell); Loch Mabin, 9st. 21b.. (W. Price); liodloh, 9st. 2lb. (It. Thompson); Kilrain, 9.st. 21b. (W. Young); Coolbeggan, 9st. (P. D. Jones); Brown Trout, 9st. (11. Thompson); Royal Arms, 9st. (E. George); Commotiou, i)st. (P. Langstone). On all sides the issue is regarded as very open. Kilrain is generally voted well handicapped, and ho may start a good favourite,. Others likely to be well fancied are Haskayno and Sir Knox, i For the SVintor Hurdles, two miles, a thoroughly representative field will bo stripped. The top-weight, The Rover, is greatly fancied by his connections, but he. is only a littlo fellow, and his weight may find him out at tho end of tlio long tiring journey. Marton is very well treated, and has his Great Northern win to recommend him. He will strip one of the fittest horses in the field. Jiyland is hardly ready, and being Mich <a free gucr lio will probably tiro badly over tho last half-mile. Darby Paul will be one of the favourites, as it i.s rumoured that ho beat North East in a gallop before leaving Wanganui. Certainly tho brown gelding never looked so well as he does now. Aberbrothock may not be at homo in the going, but Peary will sliino in it, and' so will Watchchain. Tho likely starters are as follow:—Tho Rover, lOst. 121b (P. Flynn); Coronotted, lOst. 71b. (Mr. M. Bull); Marton, lOst. 71b. (\V. Adams); Nyland, lOst. 41 b. (R. Young); Beacon. l(i>t. 31b. (J. O'Connel]);' Darby Paul, 10st. lib. (T. Jones): AberbroHiock, 9st. 101b. (W. Young); Euroco, 9st. 101b. (I'utcher); Peary. 9st. 91b. (A. Julian); lied Earl, 9st. 91b. (Feilding); Watchchain. 9st. 91b. (F. N. .Tones); Stevens, 9st. 71b. (Miller); Prince. Eddie, 9st. 51b. (R. Thompson); Waione, 9st. 41b. (M'Swceney). Another big proposition awaits backers in the concluding event, the To Aro Handicap, six furlongs. Denisc Orme, lOst., showed good form in tho open events at Ellet'slie. which will be a recommendation in her favour. Paoli scored in a hack race at Ellorslie, and is Ihjuihl to come in for support. Others to gallop well since arriving at, headquarters aro Heather and St. Serf. Big Blast was yesterday witliklraw.il from the Stewards' Handicap, to be run at Trent-ham to-day. TRANSIT OF TROTTERS. DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER, A deputation from tho New Zealand Trott Conference waited on tho Minister for Railways late yesterday afternoon to bring under his notico certain matters connected with the transit of trotters to and from race meetings. Tho deputation asked for assistance so: 1. That up-to-dato horse boxes bo provided with proper conveniences for tho animal, such as lighting, ventilation, padding, etc., and also for the attendants. 2. That to avoid contagion, strict instructions bo issued that, horse boxes bo properly disinfected before and after use. 3. That when race meetings are being held within four weeks of each other at centres on the same lino of railway horses should be allowed to break the journey either going or returning. 4. That excessive shunting and coupling should bs avoided. The Minister was sympathetic. "I have tho interests of racing at heart," he said, "and anything I can do to further tho interests of racing or trotting will 1,0 done." ne explained that new and up-to-date boxes had been provided in parts, and they were gradually increasing them. As far us possible the Department would try and meet horse-owners, lie pointed out, however, that nursing grievances for an annual deputation was not (he proper course. Complaints iu particular cases were easier to deal with. Instructions had already been issued regarding tho shunting of live-stock trains, and 'iu cases where engine-driver.? were proved to be responsible for excessive shuntin" they would be warned that a repetition of the. ofFcneo might lead to" disrating, and even dismissal.
