THE INDRABARAH TROUBLE.

' SETTLEMENT REACHED. A deputation consisting -of Messrs. 0. It. Bendall (chairman of the council of the New Zealand Underwriters' Association), Mr. J. Mallard (chairman of tho local Underwriters' Association), I''. Taylor (representing tho Lloyd's Corporation). *\V. H. Tripe (secretary of the Gear Meat Company), Captain Jiainey (representing tho Tyser Line), and Captain I'lunket (Lloyd's Surveyor) waited 1 on tho Wharves and Accounts "Committee of the Harbour Board yesterday afternoon for the purpose, of advancing reasons in favour of allowing tlu> .steamers ludrabarah aiid ■Malcarini to berth alongside ono another in order to tranship tho meat cargo of the former to tho latter. It was pointed out by different speakers that, if they had to handle the meat across tho wlmrf, a loss of between 10 and'2o per cent, would result on account of broken shanks, bruising of carcasses, and dirt. Whilst they fully realised tho extent of -the powers vested in the harbourmaster, members of the deputation woro of opinion that tho case was ono in which tho board might intervene, particularly as tho Harbour Boards at Port Chalmers and Auckland liad offered to allow the work to bo done at those ports, and that they were prepared to take all responsibility respecting any damage likely to 1m dono from berthing tho two steamers abreast. _ _ After the deputation retired tho matter was discussed by tho hoard's committee. They endorsed tho powers of the harbourmaster (Captain Johnson), in whose judgment they had every confidence. It might 1)0 nil right ono day to have the vessels so berthed, but a change' of weather might mean a wry different thing. Finally a way out was suggested b.v berthing the steamers on either side of tho Railway Wharf, and lifting tho meat out. of the ludrabarah in slings by that vessel's cranes half way across the wharf, where they could bo picked np at onco by tho Makarini's cranes. This idea was submitted to the members of the deputation, am! agreed to as a satisfactory wayout of the difficulty.
